Hello from all of us at Trinity Access 21,

Are you interested in developing project-based learning in the classroom, or leadership skills in your school? Maybe you want to find new ways to teach digital skills to your students, whether you are teaching Junior Cert Coding or Leaving Cert Computer Science, or simply want to learn new ways of incorporating digital technology into any subject across the curriculum.

If any of these ideas have piqued your interest, we’d like to recommend reading on to find out more about the Postgraduate Certificate in 21st Century Teaching and Learning at Trinity College Dublin. Or, perhaps you might know of a colleague or friend who might be interested.

We are now accepting applications for the 2019/20 academic year, with a closing date of 30th June 2019. The Cert will be subsidised again this year, so we can offer it at a significantly reduced rate of just under €500. The course is primarily aimed at post-primary teachers, but we have had educators teaching in upper primary, further education or informal learning who have gotten a lot out of the course.

Here is a link to our brochure, which describes the structure of the Cert, plus all of the different modules on offer.

More information and the application link can be found at this web page. Please feel free to share this information with any interested colleagues. If you have any questions about the Cert course or the applications process, please send your queries to the course administrator (pgcert21admin AT tcd.ie). In addition to those official sources of information there are quite a number of CESI list members who have done the course and I'm sure they'd be happy to share their experiences!

Kind regards,

Dr Jake Byrne

Would there be any similar course offered in UL or UCC?

Hi Patrycja,

You could look into the Certificate in Coding & Computational Thinking course in LIT.

Pam O’Brien runs this as well as the excellent ICT Edu Conference on the 11th of May 2019. (Full disclosure - I know Pam well and we work together in MakerMeet IE)

Also, there are many other options available in terms of CPD, etc.

I’m based in Killarney and my son went to Pres, so know your school well.

Feel free to give me a buzz if you like.

Many thanks,
Chris Reina

Thank you I would love to do a CS/Coding course but difficult to commit so much time at weekends and traveling (especially Dublin)...I’ll look into that course as it’s less meet-ups😀

Hi all,

Just a quick reminder that there's only one month left to apply for this course and it's excellent value at €500 for a level 9 Certificate, whose credits can count towards a M.Ed. in Trinity (e.g. the first year of the 3 year programme).

For those teachers that might be looking to teach the new Leaving Certificate Computer Science curriculum once it goes nationwide in 2020, we are making sure that for next years participants we will have a series of module (30ECT combining both technical and pedagogical approaches) that speak to the content and pedagogical recommendations of the new specification (e.g. team and project based technology mediated learning), with the aim of getting these modules recognised by the teaching council once they have finalised their requirements (we do know that they will require at least 60ECT to teach it as a second subject).

Jake

Pam O'Brien's LIT course is the way to go if you down this side of the country. They have the material mapped to the LOs of the coding short course and LCCS.

Hi Chris,

Do you know if the LIT course, Certificate in Coding & Computational Thinking, covers the learning outcomes of the LCCS? I'm looking to upskill to introduce LCCS in 2020/2021 in our school and would be really interested in a course not too far away from Cork.

Thanks,
Ben

Hi Ben,

Not sure, but Pamela O’Brien is also on this list and will come back to you shortly.

Cheers!

Chris
