Wondering what approaches folks are using to authenticate users/devices on wifi?

IMHO PSK is no longer suitable where lots of students have their own devices.

Hi Greg,
Our WiFi system uses Mac addresses, bit of work involved but unless your device's mac  address is in the WiFi controller you cannot use school WiFi . We have a guest network for visitors , this is PSK only, which has the broadband width reduced .

Hi Rickie,

The security of Wi Fi networks is getting more complicated as the threats as from both external and internal users. Students are becoming experts on manipulating networks.

There are four options, authentication using a captive portal, authentication using an external database or no authentication but use of an encryption key or a simple open network.

The key should be to encrypt the wireless network, so enhanced open or WPA3 should be considered.

When it comes to authentication it depends on the institute. If there is a user database that can be queried for authentication requests then one would ideally do that. For example in universities authentication using their Azure ID or AD account may take place. This could work for secondary schools as well.

If you want to send me more details on your current set up i can get one of our tech guys in Vei Global to advise.

best of luck

Bill
