The possibility of individual school closures may increase over the coming days and weeks.  Given the great knowledge that resides with members of the list, I would like to extend an invitation to each of you to share what you are considering re online teaching and learning, in the event of closure, for whatever platform you currently use.  There is great variety in the level of integration in schools anyway so it seems logical that there will be many approaches.  Some will be sophisticated, others less so.  Sharing your approach may help someone else.

Thank you to those who have done so already.

Good idea Adrienne

My most immediate concern would be for my LC French class, who have oral exams in less than 4 weeks time

As they've all G Suite accounts, I intend to maintain daily contact with them in the event of school closure, via Google Classroom & Hangouts video calls

They're familiar with Classroom as we use it for notes, sample answers etc. Hangouts will be a new experience for them, but necessary for oral prep

Hi,

Definitely Classroom. We're a GSuite school and use it widely. Specifically I'll aim to use the Classwork feature where I can give and mark assignments. This will cover a lot of my classes and allow an organised way to keep in touch with students. Some assignments can be done in Slides but a lot of them can be sent in as a photograph (Graphics, maths geometry or Science experiments).

For my Science students, it's a good opportunity to put out links to some documentaries on YouTube or Netflix along with a little worksheet that can be submitted via classroom.

I've spoken to some teachers are quite worried about the impact a 2 week closure could have, but I think there's an interesting opportunity to challenge ourselves with some alternative teaching methods. While there's a huge advantage to the human contact of being in the same room when it comes to learning, I think it's entirely possible to come up with a plan for a short period of time such as 2 weeks where students can keep learning and we can try out a few ideas that might have been on the long finger.

My Instinct would be to keep it simple. Getting students started on a new platform, when you are in non contact mode might be less than ideal.
I would go with contact via simple email, and content delivered by uploading Video, to youtube or Vimeo, or pointing students in the direction of suitable existing video on the topics.

I feel strongly that I would have to cater for the highest level of technical ineptness present in my class so as not to discriminate.

If you have an existing platform well and good, but if you don’t, this may not be a good time to start.

Best

Hi All,

Edpuzzle got a mention in the Flipped Classroom presentation at the conference at the weekend (www.edpuzzle.com).

It allows you to take a video and at appropriate moments insert questions etc which are completed before the video continues.

Worth looking into perhaps.

Hi everyone,

We will be using a mix of the tools we already use in the classroom.

For the senior classes, 3rd class to 6th class, we will use Teams Meetings where we can share screens, video and audio, write solutions using OneNote Classroom Notebook, set tasks, assignments and assessment via Forms and also record for those who cannot join in real-time. The students will also be able to present, ask questions and interact during these sessions.

This blog shares all you need to know on how to easily set up Teams in an education setting, with links to online ‘how to’ courses in the Educator Centre, tips, tricks and support.

Flipgrid will be used extensively from Junior Infants to 6th Class.

We will also use simple email to set tasks across the school as each child has their own school address, password and login to Office 365, so will be able to access all of the above through the school login on any device.

I am recording screencasts to show parents how to access all of the above at the moment and putting on ‘Unlisted’ channels on our school YouTube.

Kate.

I've made a Survival Guide for our school. I've copy pasted it into a doc here and removed some of our school codes so anyone can use it:

I'll paste it here too but I'm not sure if images will show up correctly.

Danny’s E-Learning Survival Guide

As we are unlikely to get prior notice of a school closure, it’s good to remember that signing up students is far easier while they are still in front of you. You may want to do a dry run of an online class with your students and figure out what works well for you and what doesn’t.

E-Learning will never be as good as face to face because teaching is about relationships but we must do all we can to stop students from disconnecting (in all senses of that word).

General advice on e-learning before we get to tools:

  • Stick to your school’s VLE (Schoology, Google Classroom, Moodle etc.) as the point of contact with students if it’s well established.

  • Start with revision questions, past paper questions etc. These are good low hanging fruit for a short closure.

  • If the closure is longer than expected, you may want to start with assigning tutorial videos on Youtube. Use Edpuzzle to check if students have watched the video.

  • Always sign up to online learning platforms using your school GOOGLE or MICROSOFT account and instruct your students to do the same. This is the easiest way to avoid forgotten passwords. Post join codes on the VLE.

  • Don’t expect things to work straight away. The first time you try anything is rarely a success (usually a mess). It’s computers. Nothing ever works :)
Take feedback from students about what they find useful.

  • I’ve seen some research suggesting that even the most eager students start to become apathetic with online quizzes and worksheets if they don’t have any social interaction or meaningful connection with a teacher or another student. Allow them to be social and creative (eg. with reponse videos). Half of them are instagram and tic-tok experts already.

  • The last one may sound a bit silly but it can make or break the experience. In the event that you do want to do a conference call class or record a video, take some time to ask students if your audio is crystal clear. Low microphone volume, distortion, popping, humming, and chair squeaks drive people crazy. Poor video makes it a podcast. Poor audio makes it torture. (Use Headphones to avoid Feedback)

Tools to help you teach in and out of the classroom:

Our Core Platform: Schoology

- Post Exam Papers, Questions

- Create Assignments that can be graded online.

- Post Tutorial Videos

- Create Discussion Forums.

After your main VLE such as Schoology, Edmodo etc., there’s a whole bunch of tools that you can use to keep students engaged. These are my personal top ten but you should feel free to experiment with anything that’s not on the list below. Just be sure students use their school google/microsoft account when signing up.

1. EdPuzzle: Adds questions over any video

There are tonnes of videos that other teachers have already added questions to. It also tracks how many minutes they’ve watched, what questions they answered correctly and how many attempts were needed. You can add your own questions too. My tip is to have at least one open ended question per video to let students be a bit creative and the rest MCQ’s that autocorrect.

2. Hangouts Meet by Google for Face to Face Classrooms.

Google Meet is like Skype or Classic Hangouts but is designed for big groups (up to 250 people in the same video call). This app has been temporarily installed on all iPads to allow students and teachers to practice setting up an online video lesson, discussion or meetup. You can share your screen with students (such as a page from a past paper, ebook or worksheet). Most teachers (and students) find video calls very awkward at the start. Like a cold swim, you do soon forget about the nerves after jumping in. I still find anything involving videos a bit uncomfortable for the first minute or so. They payoff is that it’s the nearest thing that you can get to a real classroom (except you can now mute that student who always shouts out :D)

3. Khan Academy for independent learning

It’s arguably the best education website in the world. I used it for Thermodynamics in college, six year olds can use it to learn basic addition and everything in between. You can assign videos for students to watch and track how many minutes they actually watched. Many subjects also include quizzes and questions. Students learn at their own pace.

4. Google Forms for surveys and feedback

It ain’t the flashiest, there’s no animations but for simple things it’s the best option. I love it because I can make a form in 2mins without much thought. It’s within the School Google account so everyone is already signed up.

5. Flipgrid for fun Pre-Recorded Video Responses
It's basically snapchat/instagram/tick-tok but for schools. The teacher posts a topic for discussion, the students post a video response into a nice grid that the teacher can give feedback on. The teacher can turn on or off the ability for students to see each other’s videos.

Honorable mentions:

Self Paced Kahoots

You probably already know of the madness that is kahoot but did you know you could assign these as homeworks for students to practice?

Quizlet for Learning Keywords
My favorite part of this is that lots of teachers in Ireland use it and you can just search “LC Physics Definitions”. You can turn the flashcards into tests too and keep track of who has practices and who has not.

DiagnosticQuestions.com:
Wow that’s a “good” question.
You know when you find that perfect question that 50% of students get wrong you’re really glad you’re about to dispel a big big misconception? Well imagine if these perfect questions floated to the top of a big pile of thousands of questions, that’s what this site shows you in lots of subjects. I can see what the worst answered Acids and Bases questions are according to the 14,000 students that have tried it. You can also assign questions on this site for homework and track who has completed the homework, how many attempts they made etc.

Socrative

Another good tool for making quizzes. Lots of features and options. I’ve never been very into it myself but it’s very popular.

Google Drive (Android)/Adobe Scan(iOS) for scanning PDFs

With your phone or iPad, you can scan worksheets or content to put up on schoology.

Really like the previous suggestions

1.      Some other basic steps which could be carried out (if schools are not using G Suite, Office 363, an LMS with their students)

Create a page on School Website with link(s) to Office 365 Word/Ppt or G Suite Doc/Slides. These can be updated as you wish and students don´t need passwords. Teachers may decide to do individual, year or departmental documents. Link to other content e.g. YouTube, Vimeo, KhanAcademy, Studio Code, w3schools, etc

2.      If you have G Suite, Office 365 or an LMS set up with your students [or use any email application], then communication through these should be straightforward.

3.      If you haven´t used Google Hangouts, Skype, Youtube Streaming, BigBlueButton, etc, with your students, I find that Zoom (video conferencing) is one of the easiest to setup and use. Ideal for teachers preparing students for oral exams. If two teachers can work together with students though this platform or any of the aforementioned, it should be really effective. [I wouldn´t really recommend more than 10 students if it is for oral exam practice]. You may also save a recording to share with others but be mindful of GDPR. To work around this, record dialogues with another teacher and then share.

That’s a really great guide Danny - lots of work done there… kudos!

I would also suggest that it’s a great guide regardless of Covid-19… “Bear Grylls” - nice one Greg. ;-)

If schools/teachers want to pre-plan and are looking for technical help - I’m happy to offer phone/online chats to anyone completely FOC.

My weekend is mostly free and next week is good for me (mostly) as well. Drop me a message with any questions or to arrange a chat.

Many thanks,

Chris

Oral and aural work - Showbie
For oral work, one option is to use Showbie.
You can attach short voice recordings very easily to a class thread, and the students would be able to send back replies.
Available on a web browser, but also by mobile app - very accessible for students

Languages - DuoLingo
Set up Duolingo for schools, and create a class such that you as an educator can see the progress and efforts of your students: https://schools.duolingo.com/

eBooks
One key thing is to ensure that all students have taken advantage of their free ebook access, creating all of the various accounts with the publishers and redeeming all codes - if students leave their textbook in a closed school, how will they access work. For 1:1 schools, this won't be an issue, but for all of the rest, the students will need help to ensure that they all have it working.

Accounts entered and notifications on, on their mobiles
Again for non-1:1 schools, ensure that the student has included their school email address to their email app on their phone.
Students also need to ensure that notifications for that account, and for apps such as Google Classroom, are turned on.

Screencasts
Use Loom to screencast presentations and other work

VLE
Ensure concensus on choice of VLE as much as possible. Keep it simple

Trial and Improvement
Already mentioned in a post somewhere above, ensure that colleagues (and students) know that technology will fail, and we will fail, occasionally.
Just try again, or try it a different way.
In the event of closures, this will be a great opportunity to just try stuff out.
To some extent, we can offer a rich variety of learning opportunities.
It will be up to the students to take advantage of them. Until they get back to school, after any lay-off, there is little you can do about it.

Here are examples from Wellington College international (China), and Gold Coast School (Queensland) sharing what they have achieved developing remote learning strategies to support learners while their schools are on shutdown.

For those school that have Office 365 of Education (Free to Schools)  here is some documentation on Getting started with Microsoft Teams for Remote Learning and How schools can ramp up remote learning programs quickly with Microsoft Teams.

Microsoft has some upcoming Teams Webinar on remote learning you may find helpful.

From what I have read users can participate inn video-calls with groups, but 1:1 video calls do not always work.
I tried a video cal with another tutor and that worked well.
Personally, I'd prefer g-suite/classroom, but it does work. Distributing docx through onedrive may force MSO on the kids and not allow off-line working like G Suite, but we'll see.

On Cloudready I can run teams as a flatpak directly in the OS and it runs very well. That way I can use the mic for calls as well, while in Crostini that is still a problem. (I can use my usb-audiocard+headphones in crostini, but not the internal card/speakers/mic).

I am a Google CRoom person but wonder about Team- is everything separate, if I put work into teams it does not go into that Notebook? If I use Notebook, it does not link with Teams or am I missing something?

Hi Geraldine,

You have to think of Teams as the utility that manages all the other apps and creates all the things you need in a classroom setup from one place. It setups up the chat space which can only be accessed in teams, the file space which you can access directly from Onedrive and the Class Notebook which will work independently in OneNote as well.

It is your choice if you want to work with the Teams app or breakout to each app however no matter where you edit it is across all apps.

Regards,

Eugene

We just did a Google hangout with 5th and 6th class students in maths.
We turned off cameras.
I presented from my screen and used Microsoft OneNote to be able to write and draw solutions for the students.
We were able to take questions and answers and solve through some problems.
Students submitted answers through their microphones or using the chat function.
Not perfect but it worked well for today - we did an hour long session.

Hi Dermot,
Thank you for that information. I am looking at options for our school. I have seen feedback that the teacher controls in these sessions are inadequate- muting options and that students can re-enter the sessions when the teacher leaves. Also, in terms of GDPR how did you gather parental permissions and does such permission have to be on a session by session basis? Thank you, Annette

Dear Adrienne and all CESI members, Firstly let me wish you all a lovely St. Patricks Day, and more importantly to stay safe and continue to do your best teaching students during this time.

I am using Office365 and rely on  MSteams. I have set up a teams for each class I teach.
Why MS Teams? I can communicate live, I can give feedback instantly, all students can collaborate live with each other on projects etc

I teach coding, digital media and GIS(using Esri ArcGIS Schools Bundle) at CBS The Green in Tralee County Kerry.

My Classes:
Subject Coding:
First Years ages 12 - 13 years

I had created a class in scratch while at school for my 1st year students and we had been using MSTeams . Just before school closed last week, I instructed my students to continue to follow their school timetable while at home, meaning they all log into MS teams each day at the time they have their scheduled coding class. I and the students communicate within teams writing posts etc while in our virtual class. I have set tutorials on scratch, in their pre-set classes in scratch. The students follow the tutorials and save. I can then review and give feedback via MSTeams live, the students can rework their scratch project while in the virtual class using MS Teams.
As a reward I have then set challenges in MS MakeCode(I set up a class and shared a link to MSCode tutorials, with clear instructions and the LINK to MS MakeCode via MSTeams) this is for the students who want to push their learning and challenge themselves(keep things fun). I am delighted to say they ALL rose to the challenge and all created a game using  Arcade in MS MakeCode. Here is a link to one of my students submissions
I plan to introduce Microbit and Minecraft education to maintain their interest. The main thing to understand, I can communicate via Teams live, I can give students the links to my classes and pre-set tutorials, we can all collaborate live during our scheduled virtual classroom, which allows students to ask questions ensuring they are keeping up and not falling behind. I can give each student separate feedback allowing me to teach at each students pace.

My GIS Students are TY forth Year Students ages 15 -16
I use MS Teams to communicate and give instructions again the class and I log into our Team at the school timetabled class time.
These students are using Esri ArcGIS software to create an App re Covid 19 and community awareness....
Link ot info on Esri Schools Bundle

Some of these students have created Surveys using Esri Survey123 to collect data on Covid 19 and Behavioural Science. we are continuing to work on the survey data and design an app.
Link to their Survey

Esri ArcGIS is a cloud based software package for schools which is free(I am a geomentor for Esri on a voluntary basis, if anyone wants to find out how to start using please email me, my GIS students won an award at this years BTYoung Scientist in the Behavioural Sciences Cat using Esri Software, "A Statistical Analyses on the HPV Vaccine Hesitancy in young Males" )

My Digital Media Students 15 to 16 years
Again we are using MS teams to collaborate and continue our classwork these students are creating digital portfolios using StoryMap here is an example of one they created for their SID campaign
CBS the Green’s Transition Year Digital Media Students: Ronan Pearse, Joshua O' Sullivan and Swithin Pais were selected by PDST in Technology on behalf of webwise.ie to represent the voice of students in Munster and Ireland on all things relating to Internet use with a focus on safety for the user, “be wise when online”. Each academic year, webwise.ie call on students from all over ...
Currently they are working on tracking Covid 19 using GIS Software and then creating StoryMap digital portfolios to document their work etc.

Peer Teaching Program
My 15 to 16 year old students had been teaching National School Students how to use Esri ArcGIS software, the National School Students are in 6th class. We are communicating with the students via their teacher using email, the National School Students created a survey using the ArcGIS software and have just published the Survey..Please click on the link and complete the survey for these young Geoscientists... we will then assist the National Students to analyse and map their data and script recommendations based on the data. The National School students created the survey and entered ESB Science Blast, we hope to continue the project and ensure these younger students achieve their goal.
here is the link to the survey the 6th class students created https://t.co/VJILjfO0T1?amp=1
Please share the link and fill in the survey for the students to continue their work

If I can be of any assistance please contact me I will be glad to share project ideas for other teachers to keep students busy and motivated, and training on the setting up of software to continue to work with students etc

Kind Regards

Subject: [CESI List] Invitation to share re remote working

The possibility of individual school closures may increase over the coming days and weeks.  Given the great knowledge that resides with members of the list, I would like to extend an invitation to each of you to share what you are considering re online teaching and learning, in the event of closure, for whatever platform you currently use.  There is great variety in the level of integration in schools anyway so it seems logical that there will be many approaches.  Some will be sophisticated, others less so.  Sharing your approach may help someone else.

Thank you to those who have done so already.

Hi  Jennifer

Many thanks for the detailed email.  It will no doubt help others as they navigate their way through a time that is overflowing with opportunities to be creative, while cognisant of the difficulties

Keep up the great work!
