Hi Miriam.

Hope the following answer - from Gemini - helps

Making Google Docs Available Offline on Chromebooks

Here's how to make Google Docs available offline on Chromebooks for your students:

1. Enable Offline Access:

  • Connect to the internet.
  • Open Google Drive.
  • Click on the Settings icon (gear) in the top right corner.
  • Scroll down to "Offline" and check the box.
  • Click "OK".

This will enable offline access for your students' most recently opened Google Docs files. They can then access and edit them even without an internet connection.

2. Make Specific Files Available Offline:

  • Open the Files app.
  • Select Google Drive.
  • Find the specific file or folder you want to make available offline.
  • Click on the "More" button (three dots) next to the file or folder.
  • Select "Available offline".

This will ensure that the chosen file or folder is accessible even when offline.

Turning Off Spelling Checker in Google Docs

Here's how to turn off the spelling checker in Google Docs for your students:

  • Open Google Docs.
  • Click on the "Tools" menu.
  • Select "Spelling and Grammar".
  • Uncheck the box next to "Show spelling suggestions".

This will disable the spelling checker and prevent it from underlining potential typos.

Additional Tips:

  • Make sure students are aware of the limitations of offline access. Changes made offline will be synced the next time they connect to the internet.
  • You can also install the Google Docs Offline extension for additional features, like creating and editing new documents offline.
  • Consider creating a shared folder for exam documents and making them available offline for all students.

By following these steps, you can ensure that your students have access to Google Docs for the State Exams, even if they encounter internet connectivity issues.

Kind regards,

However you need to be online if you are signing in to a Google account but you need to be offline to do a State Exam

So Chromebook may need to be placed in Kiosk mode or Managed Session but you need to test that in advance.

For exams we powerwash the Chromebooks, log in with an exam account and install the <Text> app, comes with most Chromebooks. We then remove from Wifi and only that account can log in from then on offline. The Text app is very basic, no formatting even, same as Notepad on windows. It can save directly to a USB key which we then use to print.
Hope that helps!
