Hi,

We are a small special education school (80 students). Trying to sort school WiFi, which is an ongoing issue. Currently out average speeds are upload 8.9, download 0.3. I have been in touch with the PDST who have advised that there is no option in our area and surveys have only started with an estimated date of June 2022 for installation ad tendering. Our provision is also not very high. Is there any alternative option or providers that anyone could recommend. Thank you.

Hi Gemma,

It seems you are looking to change Internet providers? Just to clarify it would mean that you'd loose some benefits that PDST provide such as public ip addresses and filtered Internet access. I know other schools who also had to do this. You'd have to provide the name and location or eircode of the school to get recommendations of ISPs.

Using Speedtest.net will confirm your 8mbps download just make sure you plug a ethernet cable directly into the pdst router to confirm its not hardware issues in the school.

Personally I use airwires checker to see what's available.. https://www.airwire.ie/index.php/avail

Depending how rural you are and your experience of your current Internet connection mobile 4g or Imagines 4g could possibly be your best option. Just be cautious about length of contacts.
A combination of these two websites will help determine what's the best mobile network provider in the area.

Hope this helps.

Hi Gemma,

Colm speak (or writes) wise words.

I suspect the PDST will have tried to get you the best possible connection, but it is possible there are other providers who can do better.

Also - I have come across a number of schools recently who have PDST supplied Cisco firewalls… which limit your speed (admittedly to 30gbps) - but as Colm says - plug directly into the modem/router and check speeds.

Other than that - lobby Eir (as in you and at least 50 others) mail Eir and ask them to upgrade the lines in your area. We did this (it did take a few years unfortunately) but we went from 2mbps to 1000mbps, “Fibre to the Door” which is a bit of an “unadvertised” service.

Feel free to reach out if you need any help.

Many thanks!

Chris
