I'm looking for recommendations for tablets to use with Primary School children. We want to buy a small group of tablets to start with but want to get it right first time around. If anyone has any suggestions or experience with getting and using tablets in a primary school it'd be great to get your views! Some issues we're considering are: OS, wireless?, apps, MS Office, uses for the tablets, printers, linking with school network.
Any and all advice appreciated!

Hi Roy

I'd be waiting for the next inception of Microsoft Surface. Hopefully, they'll get it right second time around!

Regards

Simon

Start with "uses for the tablets"
support the relevant teachers in getting up to speed then the rest of the answers will fall out.
If the teachers want to go for different tablets you have two choices
a)Choose one brand, and then the teachers who did not want it will try and prove they were right by showing up all its deficiencies.
or
b) Buy some of each and letter the teachers compete in demonstrating the strength of their prefered choice.

Plan it as an iterative process, and commit to not letting your initial choices lock you into future developments.

Bottom line, technological innovation works best when driven from the bottom up.

I agree completely. If your not talking about disposable tablets and refresh rate your tech program is already lost. Cheap €99 or less  tablets can do 99% of what kids need to move beyond a paper based course load. How much of a benefit would e-readers be? How many e-readers could you buy instead of an iPad? Don't treat computers like a rare resource treat them like tools. Only once we get beyond perceived preciousness of computers in the curriculum can we move beyond where we are today. Think of tablets like a cheap dump phone. "Does what you need" without the worry.

I have all three (iPad, Android 4 and a full Windows tablet) in use at the moment for a trial and I find the full windows tablet very good as it allows me to use all the 'standard' windows applications' and most importantly my own files/presentations etc. without having to go through app stores etc.
There are a lot of new windows tablets coming on the market. Here a link I just googled about new windows tablets http://winsupersite.com/windows-8/fall-2013-windows-tablet-preview
I would also be very interested to find out who uses windows tablets in Irish primary schools already and what their experience is.

Hi, with increasing wide range of tablet, hybrid (mix of tablet/laptop) and more conventional laptop/notebook devices available it can be difficult for schools to choose a suitable mobile device to match their particular learning requirements.

These ‘findthebest’websites hopefully can help, (note it is US based)

The refine your search’ functions are quite useful.

You can refine your search by manufacturer, model, operating system (Android, iOS, windows etc.,), screen size (slider), battery life, price (note is US dollars), internal storage, form-factor, camera features etc., This helps to narrow the options that may suit your needs, and hopefully simplifies the process a little.

The ‘Guide’ and ‘Assist me’ links provide additional info/supports:
