Hi everyone,
I'd be very grateful if someone could help me with this. I have an Italian student staying with me. She has a HP Elitebook 850 G8 laptop from her college, and has work to be sent in on their system, which she logs into. The laptop is not showing any wifi connection. When I troubleshoot it says that there is a code 10 problem with the wifi adapter. It's an Intel AX201 160mh. I think she isn't an administrator on the laptop so some privileges may have been removed. I've tried the obvious, uninstalling the device and drivers and reinstalling, but have had no success.
Thanks,
John Magee

Restart your wifi router (power off for 5 seconds, power back on) and if that doesn't help try another wifi before going any further... But you probably already did that!

Hi Joe / John

Pretty sure those don’t have an ethernet port, only USB-C.

She could get an adaptor, but it may not be suitable for the portability of a student.

I found this driver - but it may be the one you’ve already tried: WiFi-22.160.0-Driver64-Win10-Win11.exe

Also, the thread I found it (HP Support) on recommends a BIOS update… but I’d be very slow to tackle that… especially if the user isn’t an admin.

Hi John.
It's wifi driver or the device is disabled, check in Device Manager, scroll down to wifi device, if disabled enable, restart the notebook, if not working then remove the device  then scan for changes.
If you cannot do the above because she is not an admin, then create an Administrator account if allowed.
Start type CMD and at the popup select Run as Administrator.
In the Terminal window type the following.exactly

net user Administrator /active:yes

Press enter if successful you can logoff and login as Administrator no password.
To deactivate the Administrator account
Type this in the terminal window which must be run as Administrator

net user Administrator /active:no

Let us know how you get on

Might be one to refer back to the admin folk in her school. Perhaps they might give you admin privileges in order to help sort the laptop or perhaps they may be able to help remotely.

Hi,
I just wanted to thank Imogen, Joe, John, Chris and Val for their helpful suggestions to solve the problem with the HP Elitebook. I didn't get around to sorting it out until yesterday, but all the advice helped me to get the machine up and running, online, again. I'm very grateful to all of you for your expert advice.
Regards,
John Magee.

Out of curiosity what was the cause of the issue?

Hi Joe,
The cause was a problem with the driver for the Intel wifi network card AX 201. To be honest I'm not sure which of the following solved it, because I followed  the advice Chris gave and got a USB to Ethernet adapter. Then I was able to download and install the wifi driver and software pack from the Intel site. It worked, but was still going offline at times, so I followed Val's instructions too. When in the control prompt I reset the network connections, and that seemed to help.
Kind regards,
John.
