Has anyone experienced dying VGA ports on their laptops? Two of our
Dell Vostro 1000s, which I expect are about four years old, no longer
work with our whiteboards. Other laptops work with the same
whiteboards and these two laptops don't work with any. Reinstalling
Windows and reinstalling the graphics drivers doesn't help at all.

So, what can be done to prevent this? We have a few more of the same
model laptop and all our laptops are treated similarly, i.e. the
projector is plugged in and out once per day and the laptop is locked
away in the evening. I found an American eBay auction selling M-F VGA
convertors, dubbed "Port Saver". This makes sense if it's the contacts
inside the connector that are breaking though it might also be the
teachers levering the cable as they insert/remove it.

And where can I get the existing two fixed? I'm guessing most places
will tell me I need to replace the motherboard.

Here's the eBay link. The same thing can be bought cheaper on ebay.ie
by searching 'Male to Female VGA'.

Should we all be buying these now?

Just wondering here have you tested the faulty laptops with ordinary
monitors?
It's usually the pins (male) connectors that get fouled, but you may well be
right about levering the cable causing the problem.

Hi Brian

Yes Ive seen this damage especially when you connect and disconnect morning and evening, it also depends on how the VGA cabling is terminated, in many instances the VGA cable is much longer that required and is left to hang from the notebook causing continuous strain.

The repair of this is time consuming (not all notebook repairers can do the work in-house) and therefore it can be costly.

The cheaper option would be to purchase USB to VGA adapters for the damaged notebooks, Gender Changers or as called port protectors will protect a little against future damage on your the notebooks but make sure they are securely fastened at all times

Hi. I'm interested in why you plug and unplug VGA cables every day?

In schools where teachers use their own laptops you will be plugging
in and out constantly.

We have been using laptops for years in this way, can't say we have
experienced these problems.

At four years a laptop is approaching end of life in any case.

Thank you. I guess should remember how lucky to have dedicated laptop to IWB in each classroom.
