I'm looking for advice on how to improve that quality of sound on a Skype call to another school. I just used the sound on my laptop and had the speakers on the Whiteboard connected. While the sound appeared fine on a test call from another classroom in my school the participating schools had problems  hearing us clearly. What is the best option?
Many thanks

Using a mic on a laptop for a classroom skype is not an ideal solution, if you turn up your mic too loud so your caller can hear you you'll run the risk of feed back, I would suggest using a handheld mic to be passed around as it's needed, it means that the call has to be managed a bit.
I hope that helps, if you need to run a few tests just give me some notice and I'll see if I can set something up on our side.

Or get a USB boundary mic which is for recording an area if you are trying to pick up input from the kids. Last time I looked they were about 80 euros.

Hi Mary,

In the Dissolving Boundaries Programme we use  the Samson Q1U usb microphone for recording audio and for webconferencing. We buy from Thomann.de (http://www.thomann.de/ie/samson_q1u.htm    approx €65 inc delivery) because of their good customer service and they can be persuaded to provide an education discount. There are also some suppliers in the UK.

Key features are: good quality, good sound quality and hyper cardoid response pattern (ie it rejects noise from behind it, which is a useful feature in stopping feedback etc)

Blue Yeti is the best USB mic IMHO and approaches the quality of professional XLR mics

Budget (€140) – well that’s another story …

PS Thomann.de fantastic site for instrument / music / sound aficionados

Kindest Regards,
