All,

I am looking at investing in some "easy to use" kit for maths lecturers to help them move away from using overhead projectors. I don't want to incorporate technology for technology sake, I want it to be a genuine improvement to the students learning experience. My instinct is to move to visualisers but I'm not exactly blown away by gap from OHP's to visualisers so I'd appreciate feedback from the list. We will instigate pilot trials with Surface Pro 3's where we will wirelessly transmit their screen to the projector but with the utmost respect meant towards my colleagues not everyone would embrace technology as quick as I would so I also need less complex options too. Can anybody recommend particular visualisers and indeed anybody willing to say "I'd tried this but......."

I will take advice from every corner - either privately off the list or shared with everyone.

thanks in advance

Mark

Mark,

We have been using a surface pro and large screen TV to wirelessly project from OneNote in some of our junior cycle maths classes.  Student engagement is way up.

The OneNote note book is shared with the class so the focus is on solving the problem rather than copying down line after line of meaningless numbers and symbols.  It’s ridiculously easy to use also.

We moved away from the visualiser for the simple reason of ease of sharing the work.  I Teach DCG myself and find the visualiser great.  The surface gives great mobility in the classroom though so that you’re not tied to the desk

Huehd.com - very cheap and cheery visualier. Picked it up at BETT - Economics teacher uses it and is very happy with it. Less than 100€.

Mark, I have been watching this group from abroad, planning a trip to Ireland in the next year for a conference. I have not responded until now, but I couldn't resist. For ideas in transformative use--brain-based techniques--creative use of classroom visualizers, see my blog, FUTURETALK VIZ. http://futuretalk-viz.blogspot.com/

It is an educator's only blog about visualizers in teaching and learning. It is the only such blog I know of anywhere. If you simply scan back to the first post and skim read forward, you will find many, many creative teaching ideas and approaches.
