You can download it here:

Whatever you do avoid the free online downloaders - tried a few, they're great at the start then get polluted with viruses, malware etc

Hi Eilish,

Doing that very thing now! ;-)

If you use this website: https://en.savefrom.net/17/

Note that most of these online services are a bit “dodgy”. Ignore any and ALL popups, etc. don’t click on any link - they will all be spam.

It will however download the video for you.

Let me know if you need any further information.

Cheers,

Chris

Mozilla Firefox is another web browser very secure, but not as tab friendly as Google Chrome, it has add ons, top right corner 3 lines, down to add ons (or ctrl+ shift + A), type in youtube here and a number of options including YouTube downloader come up.  Absolutely safe, but again follow the advice above, never click those popups.

Turns out google chrome has a few varieties of the same if you click the apps button (top left) then visit the play store.  I have never used these specific apps before but all the apps within Chrome all seem to do what they say, without any 'baggage'

Hi all,

Just a follow up on this… if anyone wants to take the long way around - there are a few more steps, but it completely bypasses any of the “dodgy-ness” of using a 3rd party downloader…

Essentially, it just uses VLC Player (free) to get the hidden YouTube streaming URL. Once you get this, you just open in a browser and then you can save the video locally to your machine.

I’ll try to keep steps simple…

1) Find YouTube video you want
2) Copy URL
3) Open VLC Player
4) Go to “File” Menu > choose “Open Network” (Mac) or
Go to “Media” Menu > choose “Open Network Stream” (PC)
5) In the resulting window, paste URL into requesting field.
6) Hit “Open” (Mac) or “Play” (PC) button
7) Video will now play… pause playback
8) Go to “Window” Menu (Mac) or
Go to “Tools” Menu (PC)
9) Choose “Media Information”
10) In the resulting window, see “Location” at the bottom
11) Copy this [very long] URL
12) Return to your browser and paste URL in new window or tab
13) Video should now play in this window.
14) Right-click and choose “Download” (Mac) or
Right-click and choose “Save Video as…" (PC)
15) File will automatically be called “videoplayback” - rename to your choice
16) Save. Done.

Note here that “Official” videos (such as those from Vevo, Official Music Videos, etc. won’t work - but then again, most of these also won’t work using other services either)

Long-winded, but if you’re in any way worried about viruses (which you should be) - then this may be the best option (and hopefully will continue to work).

If this is too confusing - let me know and I’ll do a quick video showing the steps.

Cheers!

That's great thanks Chris, VLC seems to have copied the old RealPlayer downloader I mentioned earlier.

Sorry to put a damper on things, but check the legality of what you are doing.
You're probably breaking copyright Law unless the video has Creative Commons licensing, or you get explicit permission from the video author.

If you want to avoid the web browser, Python has an excellent libary for doing this! It can really save hasstle if you are doing multiple!

1. If you don't already use python download thonny. Go to tools>manage packages and search for  yt_dlp click install.

2. Type the following into the empty file and save it (replace the URL with the video you need).

import yt_dlp
yt_dlp.YoutubeDL().download(['https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ'])

3. Click RUN and it will download to the same location as the file you just saved!

4. If you want just the audio (.mp3) use the following. Don't forget you can copy and paste as many lines/videos as you like!!!

import yt_dlp
yt_dlp.YoutubeDL({'format': 'bestaudio', 'postprocessors': [{'key': 'FFmpegExtractAudio', 'preferredcodec': 'mp3'}]}).download(['https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ'])

5. There are lots more advanced options on quality/download segments of video if you want to read up on it.

PS - If you are teaching coding / LCCS and want to download multiple it is easy enough to read in a csv of urls and loop the downloads!
