Teacher Laptops

Hi,

I'm looking for a quote for a number of teacher laptops. Can anyone recommend a supplier and some minimum specs. Have one quote already for Dell, Lenovo and HP laptop. Out of those 3 brands, which would be the best?

Hi Fiona,

I don’t supply machines (usually) but I can offer some advice.

Technical:

Minimum i5, preferably i7 processors

Try to get SSD drives rather than standard hard drives

Get as much RAM as you can afford

Dell, Lenovo and HP machines are all PCs - therefore will all run Windows (10 hopefully)

Other:

It’s not really about which brand is best… almost any machine should be suitable. People have their favourites, but in my experience it’s more about the build than the brand.

I would also query whether you actually need laptops or not. If the machines will be taken home or on school trips - laptops are fine… if they will never be moved, desktops are a better (and cheaper) option.

Warranties:

Check carefully the warranties and “return-to-base” options as well as what their technical support is like as well as remote and onsite support.

Please note there is really no such thing as a 12 month warranty. Under EU law - all hardware (computers or otherwise) have an “expected lifetime warranty”. 12 months is only a manufacturers ideal.

Any device is expected to have a lifetime - this is of course arbitrary, and you will have to fill out a “Consumer Law Form” to get repair after 12 months, but it’s only 1 page and almost every manufacturer will honour this. eg: I have a Samsung TV which they repaired 3 years after purchase despite the 12 month warranty.

With laptops in particular warranty is key. So factor in min 3 years, and it should be no worse than Next Business Day on-site.

Dell, Lenovo and HP make some fine computers and it would be difficult to choose, that choice will depend on your requirements. 

Many computers appear to be very well priced until you check the specifications, some of the cheaper ones will have Celeron or Pentium CPU's installed, these run much slower than i3 or i5 multicore CPU's and this will be very noticeable on start up and running certain programs 

Rather than the supplier check the CPU speed, Ram amount and Hard Drive speed.

But if pushed I would choose Dell but that would depend on the specs 

Minimum requirements for a teacher Notebook 

First that it should be a robust business computer capable of taking the stress and strain of every day use, many computer are designed for the home user and not suitable for a school/business environment 

Core i3 with min 3MB SmartCache - 2 cores

4 GB Ram

500 - 1TB Hard drive

Ports 4 USB, 1 HDMI, legacy VGA to connect to older devices Projectors etc.

Wireless/Bluetooth and Ethernet Connector 

Windows 10 Professional 

3 year warranty

Hi all,

 

Although I supply laptops to schools I find myself using “procurement” (by using I mean, pointing the buyers towards it then helping them out once the results arrive) its straight forward and easy to navigate, ask and you shall receive kind of idea.

Regarding Spec, I think the rest have pretty much said what I was going to say and regarding warranty make sure you getting something in writing .

As always, my number is below and talking to me is free, If I’m busy ring I won’t answer, so ring back again. but remember PDST will also point you in the right direction. AND CESI list is always here.
