Hi,

My wife's primary school (Mixed to 1st Class, girls from 2nd - 6th) has a computer room that is rarely used by the junior classes.

She asked could I suggest software to download (Due to a poor internet connection they don't want to use online activities) for the infant classes to use.

I immediately thought of Scratch Junior but discovered there is no native windows application.  However using www.andyroid.net as suggested by the link below I was able to run Scratch Jr extremely easily on my own laptop.  It takes a little while to get itself installed so patience is needed but it does all the work itself.  Next step is to go to the Play Store within the Andyroid system and install Scratch Jr which worked seemlessly.

My question is:

What other downloadable (preferably free) software would you install in a computer room for infants to use offline?

Thanks and regards

Paul

Hi Paul,

http://www.coolappsforschool.com/ has some great ideas for apps in primary. The website is authored by a Primary school teacher and I used a lot of the apps with Mini iPads at Literacy and Numeracy stations in Junior Infants last year. She has tried many of them herself and reviews them according to curriculum relevance.

Hi Paul,

Following on from your reference to Andyroid.net (which seems to similar to bluestacks.com) , you can run Scratch and other Android Apps on PC. You might like to visit my curated list of Android Apps at http://android.ict4schools.ie/apps-primary.php

For non-android, just PC-based software, I have a curated list at http://www.ict4schools.ie/software.html (the top part of the list has commercial Irish-published software but scroll down a bit for the freeware list)

Kind regards,

David
