What type of printer?

Hi all

We are opening an ASD unit in the next few weeks, one class to start, moving to two over time,  and the teacher needs to have a dedicated colour printer near at hand. I can give her colour printing rights on the school photocopier but it's at the other end of the school. What type of printer solution should I be looking at that would be efficient and economical and not cost a fortune in ink over time or a huge initial financial outlay! (I want it all!!) Laser? Office jet type? Or is there something else I should be considering?

Your collective wisdom in advance is appreciated!

Hi Sinead, 

What don't you get a mid-range network printer. 

I'd make sure it's a laser printer. 

There's a huge range out there, it all depends on your budget. 

Stuff to consider : 

How fast will you need the sheets printed (5pages a min V 75 pages a min)

If you're hoping a few things will print to it, the ask for a network printer. 

(You could ask if it has Air Print so all the iPhones and iPads can print to it. ) 

How much money do you want to spend. Do you want me to put a list together for you?

Thanks guys, I think I'm looking for something mid-range alright. While I had been keen to be able to print wirelessly, I hadn't considered airprint compatible before. This has really narrowed it down for me thanks!

AirPrint/ wireless printing is by no means super important but God you'll love having them.

Mentioned already elsewhere - this little print server can be added to your network and can make all the network printers you have available to all iOS devices. 

If you have Google Apps for Education it can also be configured to make your network printers available to chrome books and android devices that are using Google Apps for Education accounts on your domain.

The printers don't have to be "airprint" or "cloudprint" compatible - they just have to be networked. The print server looks after the airprint and cloudprint stuff.
