Hello All,

For that time of year school show, has anyone any experience of streaming a show live (and simultaneously recording) using the likes of periscope? We're not all apple but there is an ipad & apple tv in the school and for the logistics of entertaining children while other classes perform we are looking into streaming the event to the various classrooms on the night to allow the children watch 'live'. We also want to record the show for parents wishing to have a copy and ideally would like one solution for the two.
I should be able to swing wifi to the event hall but would love to have your tips and ideas?

Many thanks & try to enjoy the 'wind-down',

Paul

I would look at live streaming to YouTube, seems like the simplest way. Periscope is good last I tried it was blocked in school (this might have changed) . do you have a good internet connection, thats the other MAJOR factor with streaming)

Thanks Hassan,
I will check out the youtube possibility. We have recently had our broadband upgraded and achieve high 20s mbps but the only obstacle I can see is getting an access point working in our hall where the show will take place. I may have access to a go-pro with wide angle setting - do you think this would work?
Thanks again,
Paul

Go Pro would be amazing but how's the sound quality, the only time I've used a go pro was surfing or being an idiot on a mountain bike, neither scenario required good audio.
Worth checking

Hi Paul

I may be too late getting in on this topic...

You mention android app in thread title,  have you considered the free Ustream app? It gives option to save the recording after broadcast ends

Upload speed is crucial here, and as Hassan mentioned, consider the audio quality also, especially in a hall with background noise etc

Live streaming can be as complex or as simple as you wish, I won't go into the details but feel free to contact me off list if you have specific questions

Good luck & enjoy!

I wouldn't mind hearing what you have to say, streaming is something I'm very interested in.
Sound: Do you go straight to Air OR do you use a mixer ?
Video : how many feeds do you use, on iPad / camera controlled with a controller ? If so what controller ?

Yeah Hassan,
where I'm at with it is really too complex to get into the fine details here.
I break down streaming into three categories (1) Free, or almost free using the equipment you already have (2) Mid-range, costing at least a couple of thousand, when you include dedicated software, cameras, wireless mikes, and the top category (3) professional.

I started out streaming 5 or 6 years ago using mostly free software & my existing hardware. Really nowadays, all you need is a free app on your device, set up an account with Ustream/YouTube/Livestream etc, hit the red button and away you go!
I'm now at the "mid-range", having invested in Ustream Producer Pro and then Wirecast software, and also pro-sumer hardware, such as Blackmagic Intensity Extreme and HD Video Cameras (which I also use for other purposes - couldn't justify buying hardware like this for a hobby!!).
I don't intend ever moving into the 3rd category - it's a whole other ball game.....

I wouldn't mind hearing what you have to say, streaming is something I'm very interested in.
I recently gave a soap-box on live-streaming at TeachMeet Cork. I could do the same again further up the country if the interest was there.

Sound: Do you go straight to Air OR do you use a mixer ?
Our cameras have 2-mic mixers on-board, and the Wirecast software also allows audio mixing. If possible, at a school concert etc., I take a line-out from sound-system on stage, and I mix this with another mic down among the audience, for atmosphere etc For matches, I just use audio from commentators' headset

Video : how many feeds do you use, on iPad / camera controlled with a controller ? If so what controller ?
We usually use 2 feeds, from 2 cameras into MacBook via Blackmagic hardware, and cut from one to another within Wirecast

That's just a glimpse at my own set-up, there are a number of others on the List who may approach it differently.

HI All,
thanks very much for the feedback and interest. Glad to say I have arrived at a solution here for our show which we will stream tonight. I am using XSplit Broadcaster free version which I think is only a trial but as it works and it's short notice, it suits our need for now. UStream seems to be an alternative I have to follow up more on. We recently had our broadband upgraded and whilst not finished (cisco to be upgraded I believe NCTE?) we achieve high 20s mbps which helps. I set up a school media channel on our youtube account that will air the stream and we have provided the link to all our classes where the children can watch the other classes perform before and after their own performances. Due to AUP we decided against an embed on our site on this occasion. Camera is simply a high def webcam with inbuilt mics so it is just the one feed. I'd be interested to hear of alternative set up ideas?

Regards,
Paul
