Hi CESI members, quick question for the Primary Irish teachers in particular:

I am trying to find some official (or unofficial but generally accepted) noun/verb lists for primary school students learning Irish.
For instance, I'd like to know what words my (Montessori, Junior Infants, 1st and 4th class) children would/should know.
They are not in a Irish speaking school, but they are in a great school.

So, do such lists exist and would a parent (not a teacher) have access to them?

Hi Stephen,
There are inter-activities and printable sheets (lists of short verb, long verbs and irregular verbs) in Lessons 7, 9 and 10 at www.isfeidirliom.ie.

Hi Seamus,

These are great, but it would be hard for a non-fluent speaker like myself to gauge the age range for these words. Since asking the question yesterday I've been trying to find interactive apps or games that are suitable for simple noun practice in Irish. I've the feeling I might have to make one myself, if I just had the Irish language skills!

Regards,

Stephen

Hi Stephen,

I'm neither primary nor an Irish teacher, but my students (of Spanish) and I love Quizlet (a flashcard website) - it's an app as well as a website. The website has some great functions for language learning (and also useful for other subjects). You can find prepared lists of vocab by other teachers, but otherwise you will have to create your own sets of flashcards.

Hope that helps,
Susan

Hi Stephen,

This is a Irish language website that I am working on at the moment but is not complete. There are games, flashcards etc. It has not yet been edited and so has some errors and typos. I am hoping that it will be ready for use in January and I will continue to add games and activities etc from then on.

Might be helpful

As I'm not fully up to speed on all the contributers to this list, can I ask if Stephen is a parent or a teacher and what is the purpose of the list.

Irish vocabulary for children is mostly defined by educational publishers when they publish their programmes and not specifically defined by Curriculum Guidelines. I have created 150 interactive resources for children to supplement the 'Bun go Barr' programme by publisher CJ Fallon and they are all available for free online at www.cjfallon.ie (just type 'beginner' as your login and 'isfeidirliom' as password.)

As for EASY IRISH (through the medium of English for those who have no knowledge whatsoever of Irish) www.isfeidirliom.ie sets out to be the easiest possible that totally free. Navan Education Centre with a small grant from the Department of Education and Skills supported the latter stages of this project. I've spent over ten years developing it through teaching it while continuously looking for alternatives. Quite often I come across Irish language web sites with very easy subject matter but presented through the medium of Irish. (This approach boggles me!). The reason I spent so many years designing the www.isfeidirliom.ie site was because, as a teacher of Irish to non-national parents, I could never find on-line resources that were easy enough to maintain the enthusiasm of the parents. So I had to learn programming and make my own! We hear on the news this week that the standard of Irish teaching is still not up to acceptable levels. I've maintained for years that each school (include Education Centres) should run evening classes in Irish for its parents (a staff member or local fluent speaker could make a small income on it). There is great willingness among parents to learn Irish to benefit their kids. ............ Anyway, Stephen, save yourself the tedium of looking further. The best two web sites for basic Irish are www.cjfallon.ie (school level, login and password above) and www.isfeidirliom.ie (easiest for adults - no login or password needed).

Best wishes, Seamus

Seems that my question may have come across all wrong or that I was getting it up for Stephen.  If the question was being asked by a teacher(2nd level/3rd level) there could be material that they could access that a non-teaching parent might not be able to access.  As a former teacher myself I would have a number of suggestions on materials that might be available depending on the needs to be addressed.  I'm sorry if I upset Stephen or any other contributer.  That was not my intention.

By the list I meant vocabulary list.

Sorry that got away unfinished.

Seems that my question may have come across all wrong or that I was getting it up for Stephen. I should really have sent the question direct to Stephen and not left it as an open question.

And when I asked what what was the purpose of the list, I meant vocabulary list, not mailing list.  I value this list greatly and the contributors to it and did not mean anything by the question asked.

Apologies to Stephen if in my attempt to clarify how I might offer help I gave the wrong impression.  There was no cloak and dagger stuff intended.

Ó thaobh dearcadh stariúil amháin – and it shows how much we’ve come in 10 years in comparison with Seamus’ and others’ resources – take a nostalgic peek at some prehistoric hangman (and other) games on the site tobar.ie (www.tobar.ie/cluichi/). At the time I remember building and promoting the site and encouraging colleagues to contribute resources etc. – and that was at a time when many schools and teachers were just getting their heads around what the internet was all about… OK – end of nostalgia!

Kindest Regards,

Seaghan Moriarty
