Hi

At a recent TLCF meeting, Brett Becker made a short presentation about  'Exploring the Implications of OpenAI Codex on Introductory Programming' which itself was based on a recently written paper by James Finnie-Ansley, Paul Denny (both of the University of Auckland) and Brett Becker of UCD.

My understanding is that predictive code for code writing is here and like all these developments provides both opportunities and headaches.  The question is how do we as educators deal with it - ignore it or embrace it - and if the latter what does that look like?  Can we agree on an approach?

I suspect a number on this list will have views so lets get a discussion going.

This AI hits education on a number of fronts. A lot of education does revolve around content and rote learning of dates, verbs, poems etc. which are the low hanging fruit for AI. I have not too much about the impact of AI in code but I have thought about it through a Modern Foreign Languages lens.

I used to listen to a podcast on Machine Learning https://www.learningmachines101.com/ where a contributor made a remark when they were discussing ML and education; the average 14 year old boy is not learning French to read Proust in the original language but to chat up the French 14 year girl that comes on holidays every summer. AI does not have to make instant translation perfect, just good enough to confer meaning to make it useable.

OK as the MFL teachers start a flurry of replies to that statement, another point is that education is not the initial industry that will be affected by it. Law and medicine are prime targets and a former company I worked for in the area of legislative documentation  recently advertised for an AI role. I have yet to see anyone in Irish education advertising for roles with an AI specification.

AI will be a tool for a teacher but we will need to be smart enough to engage with it as an amplifier of learning and not a replacement.

my 2c.

Hi John, Keith, Chris agus gach duine.

1 anyone like to define the difference between information technology and multimedia?
2 that said, I'm wondering if anyone else has taught multimedia and info tech, as two separate courses?
3 finally, has anyone delivered the above in Irish?
I don't mind translation. Just pointers to introduce both topics at third level would be great.
