Has anyone discovered a cost effective AI detector to use? Trying to limit use of AI in projects.

Thanks,
Barbara

I suggest that you yourself (or the teacher in question) are probably the best AI detector

Agreed Greg. You will know your students ability, and any substantial jump in quality will be alarm bells. Then a bit of digging around their understanding of the content will be enough to either put your mind at ease or show the work isn’t theirs if they don’t understand any of it.

My two cents on the matter anyway.

Well AI is a constantly moving target.
At this point, most people have about a ChatGPT level of understanding of it.    Form my limited research, I think most students are even further behind the curve than we are.  So we have to make space for the students who are not AI confident, and be clear, that we are grading on process, not product.

Three approaches.
1: Tell them, that they will have to explain anything they do in detail, so even if its AI generated, they have to fully understand it.
2: Let them use AI, but cite it correctly, and expect them to go a lot further.
3: Use an AI chat app to cross examine them verbally, in detail about the project, accept and submit this as part of documenting the process.

AACs are supposed to be about process, and documenting same. I’m not aware of documentation forbidding AI, use, but I am aware of lots of guidance saying its use must be acknowledged.

Note: I’m not writing this as an expert in AAC’s, just as someone watching developments, And I’d love anyone to point me towards any guidance which will blow the above advice out of the water.

Lawrence: Any chance you could post an example of using AI chat to cross examine a student verbally about their project?
I think that would be really useful to see.
