Hi all,

I've recently made the move to MAC and haven't looked back since. I'd appreciate if anyone has any advice or suggestions of useful software or apps to download, specially in relation to science but anything really, that they might share them. I know there are plenty mac aficionados out there in the CESIverse.

Ta in advance,

Humphrey

Hi Humphrey,

I'm not currently a Mac user but over at https://deals.cultofmac.com/ they sometimes have goodoffers on hardware and software that may be of use, including some freebies. They're not focussed on education obviously but you might pick up something useful from time to time. It's worth keeping an eye on anyway.

This is a good one for dimming beyond the level Macs allow. http://stereopsis.com/flux/

Screenshot Plus is great for screen grabs or part thereof.

If you are thinking Pages etc I’d suggest going with office – some older pages files won’t open unless you have the latest version.

Humphrey,
made the move here too a few months ago, and am really happy with it (apart from accessing network drives, network printers etc. Bit hit-and-miss)

Afraid I can't help you on the science front, but some other software worth considering listed below:

Regards
P

I just love your lofty pedagogical reason for choosing Chrome over Safari, Padraig. Agree. Mags

I may well be going down the Mac road soon, so Padraig's list here will be handy to look back on!

Then there's Keynote for presentations (far nicer to work with than powerpoint)
I use Garageband & iMovie (sound & film editing)
and of ours the biggie - when I open the mac … it works - I don't have to wait a half hour for it to warm/load up :)

Thanks everyone! A fine starter list for me to explore. Absolutely loving my MacBook - cant see why I delayed the switch for so long.

Sorry a bit late coming to this conversation - some great tips being shared here. I've had my MBA for about a year now and haven't looked back. There's rarely ever a time I need a Windows PC. Some things I liked that haven't already been mentioned are:

ResizeIt - image resizer
Stencyl - Scratch-like programming language
Spotify
iBooks Author

You can use QuickTime to record the screen (great for tutorials) free
Use Reflector(about 8€) to mirror ios devices to the mac screen, use QuickTime then as above, or for presenting in class.

Discounted mac sofware on software4students.ie with teacher discount
For photos - Lightroom can be got for 79€,
also, a quick way to view photos - highlight the photos in the file- right click- Quick Look

Just came across this on Teachnet Blog: a multi-platform application for creating / editing / reading eBooks called Calibre

Works nicely on Mac for ePubs created with Pages

Hi All,
was doing some research about software to use for online digital lessons and rang into huge issues around file
sizes and uploading them on to different types of websites. Am thinking of getting a Mac later in the year and I am wondering
is there something similar to captivate or powerpoint for creating digital lessons with the following features:
  • no large file sizes for finished project?
  • may saved and or created on line and accessible through a link?
  • generally compatible with most operating systems?
  • low cost or free?!
Looking forward to your replies, Hetty

I've found Prezi to be unbeatable for all your requirements above Hetty- www.prezi.com. It's free and lots of fun to use.
Have fun

Camtasia comes on a Mac, Screenflow is good for screen videos but not as fully featured. If you are dealing with long videos you are going to have large files, best you can do is host on Vimeo or Youtube and embed and size won't be an issue. You can get Powerpoint on the mac (IMO office Mac is better than office PC).

Export to a standard format, make it web based and it will work with any OS.

If you want free you can use Jing - its from Techsmith (make Camtasia too)

Hi all,

I also use Camtasia.  It is great for Flipping the Classroom projects and resources.
