Hi all,

As part of a new school extension, we are being allocated a new DCG room. I’m just wondering if we should kit it out with DCG PC’s or go for the laptop option. If anyone in this group has any advice or god or bad experiences as to what to go for that would be great.

My opinion as a DCG teacher over 12 years is wired preferred over wireless. Desktop instead of laptops for the students. The desktop computers are just much better for wear and tear. Parts such as keyboards, monitors or mouses are replaceable or repairable. I myself have also been assigned a DCG laptop as all teachers were supplied with a laptop as we moved more online the last two years.
The only problem and I suppose and it also applies to the laptop, is keeping the PC's upto date with updates etc. Also with regard to login details. I'm not sure how other schools but we have found it much easier to assign a username and password to every student and they remain at the one computer. They can still save to the cloud, but its much quicker to the hard drive. If the computer breaks down, they remain at the PC still. It puts the pressure on the student to maintain the PC, free from damage and pressure on me to keep them running. (students do not have admin to install updates) Allowing other classes use it for "free classes" or students to switch seats is the quickest way downhill for the room.
I have heard from other teachers with laptops for the students, that students don't charge them and when they malfunction, the students take a different one. Soon batteries are flat and none of them working.

Many thanks Lorcan. I feel the same way about PC’s being more durable but my DCG colleagues are not convinced.

I would support Lorcan's view - and this applies across the board, not specific to DCG.

Wired over wireless, desktop over laptop.

I'd agree, definitely desktops. We've had both over the years and the desktops are far more robust.
I drive our IT guy mad by cable tying all the wires together so that they can't get kicked out and mice can't get borrowed. Works a treat.

Wired is always more stable and faster than wireless.

Desktop architecture is always more powerful (and cheaper) than laptop, unless you have a specific need for portability.

I agree, I have seen far too many damaged notebook ports, HDMI, VGA, USB and power sockets from rough handling and depending on the notebook many of these are not, or not easily or cheaply repairable.

There are many options for desk cable management and adjustable brackets to hold monitors above the desk space and of course wireless for the desktops.

Long term; desktop is best

I have experience of both devices - 100% for a lab go with desktops. The obvious reasons others have stated already around keyboards etc. If you are looking at the framework devices I have experience of both:

The Dell Precision 3451 has terrible thermals with inadequate cooling - as a result the processor clock speed is thermally throttled. The fan kicks in under minimal load and it is one of the loudest fans I have ever heard on a laptop. I updated to the latest firmware and the thing was unusable so I rolled it back. Performance lacklustre to say the least and this was specced up with 32GB RAM!!

The HP is a solid machine. The quadro card is decent enough - what is nice is that it supports four independent displays so you can have a very tasty teacher desk set up with triple monitor and projector!
