Demystifying ALTs

Hi All,

The Department of Computing at ATU Donegal ran a very successful Delivering ALTs module as part of their HDip in Science in Computing for Educators programme last year. The module aims to help teachers deliver ALTs and is structured in a way to tailor them around the current years project. This year for example we run ALTs 3 & 4 first, followed by 1 & 2, with ALT 4 running on Saturday the 9th December, in time for the release of the project brief. The module is very well received and only costs €200. You can choose to complete only 1 module or 6 modules (* €200 = €1200.00) to achieve the HDip qualification.

Hi Gary,

Does completing the 6 modules allow a teacher to register with the Teaching Council as a computer science teacher? I am registered myself but I would like to encourage other staff members in my school to upskill.

Hi Ollie,

We have had many teachers to date, who have completed 60 credits on the programme (6 modules) and have gone on to register with the TC to teach LCCS.

Hi Alice,

Thanks for the lovely complement, we do think it’s very good, and teachers who complete it are also typically fully of praise.

All of the modules are online, apart from one of the Saturdays for Robotics in the primary classroom, which needs that hands-on interaction with the robots.

Hi Ursula,

The Saturday sessions normally begin at 10am. Your lecturer should be in contact with you shortly to give exact details on these.

You need to attend the Saturday sessions as they are very interactive and cover a lot of the material for assessment.

I was wondering about your H Dip in CS. I have the certificate in coding and computational thinking completed in Thurles. Would these modules be transferable?
