FHIR API performance issues

When we are retrieving specific binary resources it takes anywhere from 6 sec to almost 2 minutes to get a response from the sandbox FHIR API. Before we make major changes to our application to account this slowness, we wanted to verify if this is issue unique to the sandbox environment OR can we expect similar performance in customer's cerner environments?
