We're working on our SMART app and are needing to know what browser specs should we be testing to a Cerner Embedded SMART app (IE 10+, Chrome, Safari, etc)  What are the dimensions of the window in which the SMART app runs?  Is there a required screen resolution for users of Cerner?

Thanks.

Hi, Patrick!

Cerner EHR leverages Internet Explorer for running the embedded SMART apps.  Most of our clients are on IE 10 or IE 11.  The embedded IE browser defaults to IE 7 rendering mode for backwards compatibility with old applications. The old IE 7 rendering mode must unfortunately be overridden on each page with the following tag:

<meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=edge">

Thanks,

Yegor

Sorry, missed the second part of your question in my initial reply.

Dimensions of the window will vary by client as they have control over EHR configuration.  Users also have control to resize individual views.  Physical screen sizes and resolutions will also vary between clients.

Thanks,

Yegor

Hi Yegor,

Have you seen any issues with IE compatibility with apps as they progress through the SMART launch flow?  Is it necessary to add the "X-UA-Compatible" header value in addition to the meta tag?

Thanks!
Travis

Hi Travis,

This question is great timing :) We just published a few SMART FAQs for apps. The X-UA-Compatible header is one of the topics covered: http://fhir.cerner.com/smart/#x-ua-compatible-tag

It also has information about browser requirements: http://fhir.cerner.com/smart/#browser-requirement

And several other commonly asked questions about SMART app requirements at Cerner.
