Create operations allowed on open sandbox?

Is it possible to create a documentreference or any other resource using the open sandbox or does one need to move to the next level of testing to gain access to the secure sandbox?

No, create operations are not allowed using the open sandbox. You will need to have access to the secure sandbox in order to test creates or updates.
