May just be a glitch on my end, but search is not working on ceres-solver.org. I.e. it just endlessly displays "searching" with the moving dots.

ah funtimes, let me see what is going on. Likely a Sphinxdoc bug of some sort.

I have no idea what is going on. Anyone here a sphinx-doc expert?

Not a Sphinx expert. However, I see an "Uncaught ReferenceError: jQuery is not defined" when inspecting the webpage. Searching for the exception points to a problem in sphinx_rtd_theme (which we use) described at https://github.com/readthedocs/sphinx_rtd_theme/issues/1452 together with a possible solution.
