Walang Sugat: A Classic Filipino Zarzuela by Severino Reyes
Walang Sugat (literally, "no wound" or "unwounded") is an 1898 Tagalog-language zarzuela (a type of musical theater) written by Severino Reyes, who is also known as the "Father of the Tagalog Zarzuela". The zarzuela depicts the love story of Tenyong and Julia, who are caught in the midst of the Philippine Revolution against Spain. The zarzuela is considered as one of the most popular and influential works in Philippine literature and theater, as it reflects the patriotic sentiments and cultural identity of the Filipinos during the colonial era.
Plot Summary
The zarzuela is divided into three parts, each consisting of several scenes. The following is a brief summary of the plot:
- Part One: Tenyong and Julia are engaged to be married, but their wedding is postponed because Tenyong has to join the Katipunan, a secret society that fights for Philippine independence. Julia embroiders a handkerchief with Tenyong's name as a token of her love and loyalty. Tenyong's mother, Tia Benita, disapproves of their relationship and wants Julia to marry Miguel, a rich and loyal Spaniard. Miguel tries to woo Julia, but she rejects him.
- Part Two: Tenyong returns from the war wounded and disguised as a beggar. He visits Julia's house and sees her with Miguel, who claims that they are married. Tenyong believes that Julia has betrayed him and leaves heartbroken. Julia, however, is only pretending to be Miguel's wife to protect Tenyong from the Spanish authorities. She plans to escape with Tenyong at night.
- Part Three: Julia and Tenyong meet at the church where they were supposed to get married. They are surrounded by Spanish soldiers who have been tipped off by Miguel. Tenyong fights them off, but is fatally shot. Julia reveals that she has never married Miguel and that she has always loved Tenyong. She also shows him the handkerchief that she embroidered for him. Tenyong dies in Julia's arms, while she sings a song of farewell. The zarzuela ends with a chorus of revolutionaries who vow to continue the fight for freedom.
