Hello all –
As we gear up for our last (can you believe it!) Community Studio, I wanted to give a quick recap of last month’s session and let you know what’s ahead for next weekend.
This last session will be an open session for presenting and getting feedback on your projects. The public debut of the projects will be held at the upcoming United Way community conference on November 8th. We will discuss this in more detail during the Saturday session. At this United Way event, Tommy and I will introduce the studio, its intentions and methods, and then turn it over to everyone else to do their “elevator pitches” in a round-robin style around the room. You will also have posters for each of your projects that you can point to and discuss your work with folks (perhaps find some like-minded souls who’d like you join you in what you’re doing).
But don’t worry about producing a poster – we are going to help you with that! What you need to provide is a write-up of your elevator pitch and one very good image that you think encapsulates what it is you’re communicating. We will create the rest in concert with you. (See the attached example.) We will also include a “map” to the projects in general so that the audience can orient themselves to the different types of work you all are doing.
If you’d like to send me your write-up (with title) and/or an image before this coming Saturday I will do a mock-up of your poster and we can review it together at the session.
At the previous session we also discussed “drawing out” your ideas – back of the napkin – types of diagrams you can use when talking to people about your work. This type of work is difficult to get at in an email message, so for folks who where not there last session, or for others who would like to practice some ideas they’re working with, we’ll make sure we carve out time to review and develop your strategies.
See you all soon,
Lynn and Tommy

Hi everyone. Some of you may have heard the news. We are going through some hard changes at UW & Hands On. Please read the message below. We are in the process of evaluating our work moving forward and also wanted to let everyone know that the Community Engagement Summit is being postponed until the Spring of 09. We are moving forward with your projects but my time may be limited due to our current situation. Email me directly at armand...@unitedwaycapitalarea.org or call me at 512-225-0360 if you have any questions. See you all on Saturday.

HOCT Advisory Council members,
Due to the current economic environment and the impact it is having on our operations and organization, United Way Capital Area regrets to announce that we are eliminating 7 staff positions from our headquarters in Austin. All affected staff have been offered severance pay and associated benefits.
While these reductions are painful, we feel they are necessary now to position us to continue with our mission to change community conditions and provide opportunities for all Central Texans to succeed. This will allow us to maintain momentum around our work in the 3 focus areas of education, financial stability and health & community engagement through Hands On Central Texas. Our funding commitments to nonprofit agencies are unaffected as is our commitment to engage, help and serve the Central Texas community.
Please know that the work United Way & Hands On will continue and we will now rely even more on your guidance and leadership. Let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you,
Mando
