I am in the process of applying for a small ($500) American Library Association/PBS Frontline grant to hold a program at one of our branches in October on social entrepreneurship and thought that it might be an opportunity for the public innovators group to meet and discuss our efforts at developing innovative social projects in the community. Frontline has produced a series of films on examples around the world of social entrepreneurship. The program would be a one hour film or series of film clips, followed by a discussion lead by a facilitator, and a brief panel discussion on local projects. The grant is only enough for publicity, refreshments and a small honorarium for the facilitator, but it might be a good venue for a small public discussion on the concepts and ideas we have been discussing. If there's interest, a follow up forum might be possible. Tentatively we were thinking of Wednesday, October 15th from 6:00 - 8:30pm at the Yarborough Branch at 2200 Hancock Drive. Would any of you all be interested in participating in this either as a participant and/or a panelist?  I also do not yet have a confirmed facilitator. Thoughts?

"These are just some of the profiles that have appeared in the FRONTLINE/World series:
In India, a computer engineer puts Internet kiosks in poor neighborhoods
throughout his country, helping bridge the digital divide for thousands
of children.
In Kenya, a world-class long-distance runner uses her prize money to start
a training camp for poor village women.
In South Africa, a business entrepreneur invents and installs a merry-go-round
that, when spun by children, pumps enough water for a village of 2,500.
In Guatemala, an American coffee distributor helps develop organic growers
whose beans can then be marketed as “fair trade,” providing them a living wage.
In Uganda, two young social entrepreneurs develop a revolutionary model for
microlending, using the Internet to connect borrowers with lenders, person to
person -- a venture that has grown from one small village in Africa to 11
countries around the world.
FRONTLINE/World has assembled these and other short films for distribution to participating

I would be interested in participating – if you want the corporate perspective.  If it is not a fit, I am fine with stepping out.

I think this is great, Tom, and ironically on a topic I’ve been very interested in lately! I’d love to participate.

I had lunch yesterday with Michael Strong, CEO of FLOW (tagline – liberating the entrepreneurial spirit for good) and he’d be excellent as a panelist. This is also a project that John Mackey of Whole Foods is very involved in so he might be a good contact or resource as well. Check out: http://www.flowidealism.org/2007/dashboard.html

Tommy and I facilitated a session at a week or so ago at InnovationCamp 2008 hosted by GSD&M on the topic of “Civic Entrepreneurship”. http://innovationcamp.pbwiki.com/  The organizers of this event would likely also be good prospects for this discussion. I don’t have their contact info but will get it to you. At that event, I learned about Ashoka http://www.ashoka.org/ which focuses on these issues. I met one young man who is involved with them as a volunteer (I think) so I could try to track him down.

As far as facilitators, I think Taylor Willingham of Texas Forums might be a good choice. She’s done a number of filmed projects for NIF and Kettering, and is teaching a class on civic entrepreneurship as well!

I look forward to seeing how this idea evolves and helping any way I can!

Diane

Tom,

I registered but could not attend the session referenced below. It would be great to have that session repeated.

I suggest contacting the Whole Plant Foundation at Whole Foods.

Session Description – Microfinance - an innovative way to empower individuals in the developing world

This session will discuss the philosophy of microcredit, liberating the entrepreneurial spirit and why this mission inspires Whole Foods Market and our 54,000 team members. Participants will discuss ideas and ways they might be able to engage and support the microlending mission of Whole Planet Foundation or other organizations creating seeds of economic prosperity around the world. Whole Planet Foundation (A Whole Foods Market foundation) is dedicated to supporting microlending programs in countries where Whole Foods Market sources products. In less than two years, Whole Planet Foundation has committed over $6 million to microlending programs and to date, this has supported the creation of over 15,000 small microbusinesses (average size of each loan is $150), in partnership with outstanding microfinance institutions such as 2006 Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus and others such as Pro Mujer and Adelante Foundation.

SESSION LOCATION:
Plaza Level of Whole Food’s Corporate Headquarters (upstairs, by the playground)

To find this area, either
a) walk up the flight of stairs near the front entrance of Whole Foods and entering the corporate office area
b) take an elevator from the parking lot to Plaza level (marked as PL in the elevators).

Once you enter the offices, the receptionist will check you in and direct you to the session meeting.

Thank you all for your responses so far. More are welcome! Please note the October date on your calendar. I'll be putting the application together over the next couple of weeks. I'll be out of town next week (14th-20th), but perhaps for those of you who are going to the workshop on the 24th we can talk about it more then.

Tom,

Just now getting to your email.  Yes, I love this idea, I would be very interested in participating in any way at all and might I suggest a facilitator?  Sheila Balog.  She works with us in the planning department.  She has facilitated a number of our community meetings.  She is great.  I can ask her if you are interested.

We were successful in getting the Frontline/World grant, so the program on October 15th at our Yarborough Branch will definitely happen! KLRU and United Way have both offered to help spread the word. I appreciate everyone who offered to help and I'll take you up on that! Tommy Darwin has agreed to moderate. I think this will be a good discussion and a good opportunity to spread the concepts of social entrepreneurship a little more widely in the community. Maybe we can get a few more public innovators!  I'll send out more information later, but in the meantime please put this event on your calendar. I hope to see some of you this Saturday morning at the United Way. Thanks!
