Hi everyone.  I’m back and ready to regroup the group!  Please mark your calendars for the final session of the Community Studio – Thursday, October 30 from 6:00-8:00pm.  At this session, we will discuss our final project ideas, answer any questions you may have in regards to United Way Staff capacity to support you moving forward and EAT!  We’d like for everyone to bring an entrée or side dish and we will also provide one entrée and drinks (coffee/water).  Also, it’s byob or wine or tequila! (kidding on the last one).  So bring your favorite bottle of wine or six pack.  Or you can just drink water.  No pressure on drinking alcohol. ;)

I also wanted to let you know how we can work together on the projects moving forward.  We will…

Work together on existing projects/initiatives to help us achieve our goals (i.e. Volunteer trainings, Innovation Workshops, Comm. Engagement Summit, Mentoring Initiative, Bank on Central Texas, etc.)

If there is a new project the PIs want to develop, we can help on a very limited basis

New projects that impact our organization & staff workload will need to be approved as well.

Please let me know if you have any questions.  I will go more into detail at our meeting/potluck.

Mando,

I may have a conflict tomorrow night, and may not be able to attend, but I could squeeze out of that other activity if you tell me now that our proposed gathering has a purpose. It sounds that the Public Innovators program is being dropped like a lead balloon due to staff and financial resources shortages. If so, simply tell us. Don’t drag us on. Neither you nor we have the time for it.

I’m trying to implement my strategic planning initiatives statewide and in a community. It would have been very appropriate for strategic planning to be understood by non-profits in Austin.

Jose' and all,

Thank you for your honesty.

I guess it calls the question of:

1) how much or what kind of support or sponsorship United Way can bring to our endeavors;
2) how much support and positive collaboration we can create among our PI cohort, and
3) how much (eg: is it 70% or 100%?) is left to our own individual initiative.

It would help me, I think, to see a possible connection made of how these projects may be consciously linked or associated to the overall strategic direction of United Way or correlated with the 3 targeted arenas of effort.  Let's also do an accounting of what projects are on the possible launching pad and how they also may connect with each other

Thinking systemically yours,

Steven

PS Tommy and Lynn have been a blessing, and I am grateful for their tremendous contribution.

Jose. I think you just need a big ole hug!  ;)  We’ll be discussing how we’re all moving forward and to be concrete, we will provide projects (VPL Trainings, Middle School Mentoring, Bank on Central Texas, Latino Engagement Initiative, etc.) that will help support our work (for those of you that want to stay connected with us).  For those of you that want to do something a little different, I will support you on a limited basis with time and connections.  Unfortunately, we do not have funding available for projects.

Now, I for one would love to see you on Thursday.  So you better sneak out and bring some food!

Steven,

Great synopsis….and more patiently stated than I did in my “private” email to our “Fearless Leader.”

I, of course, call it “strategic” thinking while others call it “Critical Thinking.”  Notice the caps in Critical Thinking. Google it, and you will find loads of explanations of it.

Gracias

What a gracious response, Mando.  Thank you for the continued energy and support you’ve brought to the group, and really to our community.  I truly appreciate having had the opportunity to participate in the Harwood seminar and the on-going Community Studio exercises.  I’m sure that your programs have been strained for resources, especially now, so United Way’s commitment to this process through this point is really a gift.

Thanks also to Tommy and Lynn and their own brand of innovation and community stewardship, it has helped me (and I can only imagine others) to broaden my approach in developing new programs and community efforts.  It’s great to know that UT sees a value in this work and is willing to put their talent where their ideals are.

And, whether we continue our community efforts collectively or as individuals, it’s been great learning with you guys – I hope to see you out and about fighting the good fights.

Mando, Thank you for your help and patience. I am so glad for the
updates because for some reason I had it in my head for Friday.
Thanks. I will certainly look forward to an analysis etc. of how we
will all fit with the Police Monitor programs. Also, I want to learn
more about the taco project. I had read something about it earlier in
the Statesman. My best, Beverlyl

Regrets, I have a program here at the Library on Thursday and won't be able to attend. I hope all goes well and that we can keep up the momentum to support innovation and civic engagement.
