There's an article in today's Orlando Sentinel that says that hopes
for passing SunRail have all but died. Well, there is one more day in
the session. We desperately need SunRail and the general lack of
understanding about that among our leaders and our citizens is really
unbelievable. What must happen today is that those who are
championing SunRail absolutely need to strike a compromise deal that
gets enough votes. CSX could lower its price for the tracks a little
and could take on a bigger share of the insurance costs. Divert a few
more million $$ to South Florida if that helps. As it is Central
Florida is stuck in a 1960's pattern of development that has shown to
be a complete failure. Those who are happy to kill this project are
dooming Central Florida citizens to continue choking ourselves on
pollution, high fuel consumption, and traffic congestion, and
destroying millions of acres with sprawl development. Can't you see
the madness of continuing down this course? This rail project has to
be saved or there won't be another chance to fix all these ills for
many years. Of all the things to spend our limited tax dollars on
this should be one of our highest priorities. The economic boost it
gives to our region and our state makes it pay for itself. Sweeten
the deal a little, compromise a little, and pass this thing. It's got
to happen today!

Today is a very sad day for Central Florida. SunRail is officially
dead.

Here's yesterday's Orlando Sentinel article that explains a little
about why:

I read today that SunRail supporters will be regrouping to see where
we go from here. That should be interesting. I'll let you know any
news that I hear about this in the near future. Stay tuned...

Well, now what? The reality is that we have a lot of work to do in
Central Florida with or without rail. Rail in Orlando is an
inevitability, so let's continue to plan for future rail no matter how
far in the future it is, it's eventually got to happen. The local
governments came together on the SunRail project in an unprecedented
way. We don't have to go all the way back to square one. Let's
continue building on the progress we've already made. I think some of
the next logical steps ought to be to consider phasing rail in in
smaller increments. Another huge step that needs to be taken is to go
ahead and start putting in express bus lines along planned future rail
routes. Connecting future rail stops and planning the future rights
of way for the rail should be happening now, not later when the land
values are even higher and when redevelopment will be even more costly
and harder to pull together. Creating a logical express bus system
would allow us to center walkable development on transit nodes and
allow for much more efficiency in the existing system without very
much of an expense at all. Let's get to it! I'm going to be talking
to some of our local leaders about this very thing and will keep you
up to date on our progress.

Hey, Everyone,

Looks like SunRail is still breathing after all. The Dyer, Mica,
Constantine triumverate are working on another effort to fund and
insure the project. Many of us who care about moving Central Florida
into the future will be happy to see progress on this. Here's the
latest news on that front (from May 7th):

Check out sunrail.com for a complete description of all the progress
that's already been made in the last 2 years. I found this map from
the site interesting in particular:

http://www.sunrail.com/otherinitiatives.asp

It shows the areas that are being targeted for additional rail or bus-
rapid transit needed to create a system that serves the whole metro
area. Stay tuned...
