Interesting article, though I disagree with the forced point.
Electronic collectivism is a new animal. It has real similarities to
the Marxist ideal of voluntary communism, but this should in no way
translate to the acceptance of governmental socialism. The 20th
century Leninist experiment failed in Russia. Involuntary socialism
doesn't lead to voluntary communism. Working for free for mutual
benefit is a wonderful phenomenon made possible by the web. Socialist
governments have never enabled or encouraged this sort of spontaneous
sharing. The author wants to redefine socialism and then wrongly
tries to put the label on electronic collectivism. Let's just call it
"freedom". Free people can share in their abundance freely. This has
nothing to do with socialism whatsoever. Remember the golden rule,
"He who has the gold makes the rules." That's the basic flaw of
socialism. Centralizing the control of too much wealth in the hands
of a few leaders means the freedom of the many will inevitably be
compromised.
