Let's talk about venues around here that are friendly to electronic
music.

Bars? (Something tells me you have to have at least one guitar in a
bar unless it's understood you're doing the DJ thing.)

Coffeeshops?

Schools?

Theaters?

Festivals?

Other?

Personally, I've never played live anywhere, however my girlfriend is
a DJ for 88.3 FM. It's the Dickinson radio station, but she's an
executive of some kind, she's in charge of local and experimental music
(I think). I do know the station was looking for local artists who
would be willing to perform live for no pay. So, there may be an
advantage in contacting Dickinson College.

Cool, thanks for the tips!

I know Messiah College in Grantham gets some good shows. They get
some national acts and a lot of more regional ones. I saw Venus Hum
there in 2005, and heard Aimee Mann was there the following year.
Shows are in the student union which is like a huge room with a stage
in it, with lights and speakers. There's a food court and a coffee
shop around the other side, which is good if you are into snacking
while you play. Seems like the kind of place where people could
either focus on you or not as they choose.

As far as I know, Penn State Harrisburg don't get shows. Maybe
someone can say otherwise.

Does Dickinson get shows?

Dickinson does get shows every so often, although I'm not sure where
they are held. I've never been to a show at Dickinson, but I think
they usually book more mainstream artists. I'm sure they would be
interested in booking artists they don't have to pay, I don't know if
that works for you, but I'm more interested in being heard than making
money.

We have played at Rumors in Enola, the Waterway in York, Circle Pit/
Dungeon in Carlisle (now closed), Facktory in Liverpool, Bube's in Mt.
Joy (on Shadowland Lancaster night), Johnny Joe's in Mechanicsburg.
We have better crowds at The Sterling Hotel in Allentown, but that is
a bit of a drive... and not quite Central PA.

We are playing at the Chameleon Club/Lizard Lounge this Saturday
(2/7/09) in Lancaster.

It's not so much the venues that are the stumbling block. It's more
of who you know.
We have found that if you can get chummy with at least one band who
plays out regularly enough, even if they aren't exactly electronic/
industrial, then you will have better luck getting shows around the
area on a ticket with them. Eventually, you can start to separate
yourself and be a little more independant.
