Fello wWoodworkers,

I want to use a piece of thin birch veneer as a lamp shade in a cylindrical lamp fixture, so that the light provides a nice ambient glow. I need a piece 3x3 feet to give me enough to work with. And I can’t use the paper-backed veneer that they have at Hardwood Industries, I understand.

Who do you recommend as a source for this?

I've bought a lot of my veneers through an ebay vendor named "so.inveneer". I've purchased both maple and walnut veneers from their account and it's always been nicely packaged and of great quality -- no cracking or warped figure! Here's a look at one of many of their birch veneers

Hello Dave,
That is a difficult item you are looking for. I don’t know if any veneer supplier that has a sheet of actual veneer that big without a backing or PSA surface added.
You will probably have to splice a few narrower pieces together first. Cut to shape and then roll or form to make a lamp shade. A piece of 3 foot x 3 foot raw veneer is not very common in any species to my knowledge. Someone else may know of a source but I don’t. If you don’t find a source give me a shout and we can discuss what else you will need. Like softening/flattening solution for instance. If you do find a sheet of raw veneer that big it probably won’t be flat or pliable enough to shape into a lamp shade.
