Hi Folks,

I think it was last year that I made a replica of a Disston half back saw (Disston_No_8_half_back_saw_replica). Chris Frazeur liked it so much that I sold it to him.

Hmmm, no jobsite saw for me. So today I made one (new_jobsite_saw). It has a 15" long 0.032" thick plate (2" longer than the half back saw), 11 ppi filed for crosscuts, and a beech handle.

I removed the bluing with vinegar and used Flitz metal polish to remove the finish left by the vinegar.....it's nice and shiny (although it shows fingerprints much too easily).

See that black thing in front of the saw? That is a scraper I made from the leftover steel once I cut the plate to size. I ground the profile so it matches the Crucible scraper sold by Lost Art Press. I have one of theirs, and this is the second one I have made with that profile. The slight curve has proven to be quite useful.

Now I have to make a holster for the saw because it will reside in the back of my vehicle. If you have ever seen all of the tools I keep in the back you know why I'll make a holster to protect the saw.

Hi Folks,

I mentioned my saw plate was shiny. That comes in handy when sawing. If the reflection of the part you are sawing looks straight, then you are sawing square to the piece (see sawing_square). If the reflection of the part looks to be square to the actual piece, then you are sawing at a 45 degree angle (see sawing_a_miter).

The miter I cut that you see in the pictures was done this way and it measured 45 degrees.

So besides looking pretty, a shiny plate can speed up your sawing if you are sawing squarely or a miter cut - no square necessary. I'm sure this works for other angles, but a straight reflection and a square reflection are pretty easy to see.
