Hi Folks,
Back in June, at the SAW meeting I mentioned I was trying out Flitz metal polish as a stropping compound. So 2 1/2 months later what are the results?
As far as its ability to polish, I see no improvement over my favorites, Herb's Yellowstone, and White Gold (from ellenwood arts). It's just as good, but not better.
I'll continue to use Herb's on my flat strops, and will vary between White Gold and Flitz for my curved strops (carving tools) as the mood strikes me.
Both Flitz and White Gold are easier to apply to my carving strops - Herb's is best scraped onto a strop and buttered in, not so good on thin, round strops. Flitz is a little easier to apply, but it's messier - it is a cream. White Gold is waxier than Herb's so it is easier to apply to any strop without much mess, but the Flitz gives a more even distribution of product. Flitz also works better on leather than it does on cardboard or directly on wood.
So any of them will give you equivalent results and all are equal in speed of polish. The only thing left to evaluate is how well does the Flitz last, and does it perform as well when dry.
I've been switching back and forth between the compounds since the SAW meeting, stropping with all three on a single sharpening session, looking for a clear winner.
