Subject: Jean Puchstein

I’m sorry to report to you that long-time social justice activist Jean Puchstein has died on December 9.  She was 94 years old.

Jean was a long-time social justice activist, having been a leader in the Columbus NAACP during the civil rights movement and beyond.  She was also active in the peace movement, working with the Ohio Nuclear Weapons Freeze Campaign and with the Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space.  Over the years she hosted many people in her home including peace activists and people released from incarceration.  She was a member of the University Presbyterian Church in Columbus.  In later years she joined the Central Ohioans for Peace and vigiled for peace many times with that group at the corner of High Street and Route161.

She suffered a stroke about a week before her death.  She had family in Columbus that saw that she got around, but she still was cooking, doing laundry, etc. up until the last week.

She leaves a daughter and son-in-law, Paula and Dave Stevenson in Columbus and a son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Kay Puchstein in Florida.  She has 4 grandsons and also has great-grandchildren.
