I read William Bouwsma's John Calvin: A Sixteenth-Century Portrait when I was a college senior, and found it pretty engaging and accessible.

I don't know about the quality of the data here (based on Wikipedia), but it might be worth a look:
Click on 1500 AD (sic) and click and drag to the left to scroll right on the timeline to see what else was going on in that period.

Any other recommendations for resources for Calvin and his context?

That timeline is a great application!

I found it interesting that (according to the Introduction in the
Westminster Press edition of the Institutes) Calvin would never have
even met a Jew, nor, for that matter, anyone who didn't
unconditionally believe Christ was their savior, the veracity of the
Bible, etc.
