blocking websites

Hi all, i want to know how to block websites in SME 8 server. i have tried with iptables its not happening...

Are you talking inbound or outbound? Ie: Is your goal to stop your server from going to certain websites, or to stop certain IPs from hitting your server?

its outbound ie.. certain social networking sites like facebook.com has to be blocked from access.

You could create entries for each in the /etc/hosts file. Something like this:

 

127.0.0.1              www.facebook.com facebook.com

127.0.0.1              www.twitter.com twitter.com

 

You can put these all on the same line, but for visibility sake separating may be easier to manage. You can also point it to whatever IP you want. 127.0.0.1 will just hit the loopback which won’t make it very far.
