Sib. 7.5: Sibelius won't open "problem with file permissions"
Posted by ronaldroy - 21 Aug 11:26PM Hide picture
I have recently had to replace the hard drive on my Macbook Pro and Sibelius won't open, giving the error: There was a problem with file permissions. I am getting this error when trying to load Sibelius directly, not just opening a sib file.
The full story: Macbook died with suspected hard drive problem. Turns out it was a faulty SATA cable. In the mean time I have installed a 240GB SSD in the macbook and the original hard drive in an external case. The old HD (now external USB) seems to be OK and I access files from it. I performed a Migration from this external disk to the SSD and pulled across most of what I need ( I think). All other files and apps I have tried so far seem to work.
Any ideas? I haven't reinstalled from CD yet (my CD is Sib 7) - thought I'd try here first.

Sib. 7.1.3: Uneven playback
Posted by John Williams - 28 Aug 04:22PM (edited 28 Aug 06:33PM) Hide picture I've set the Playback Performance on a simple piano score to Meccanico for both Espressivo and Rubato and a Straight Rhythmic Feel and the playback still has uneven note durations. i.e. note durations are not consistent. I've turned off Live Playback to no avail. Any ideas what I should do next?
A follow-up to the above paragraph, I created a new blank piano score and turned on the Click and pressed Record. The beats were very uneven. In a 3/4 meter beat 1 was long beat 2 was short and beat 3 medium and each measure was slightly different than the one before. Back to top Allthreads Re: Sib. 7.1.3: Uneven playback
Posted by Sam at Sibelius - 28 Aug 07:37PM Hide picture Hi John,
This can happen if you're using the built-in device for playback. Go to Play > Setup > Playback Devices and click Audio Engine Options. Change the interface to one that ends in WASAPI or ASIO (which will only appear if you're on Windows) and it'll give you more reliable playback.
This article goes through these things in more detail:

Posted by John Williams - 28 Aug 08:15PM Hide picture Thanks Sam. I'm using a MacPro OSX 10.6.8 and all the options in the Audio Engine end in (CoreAudio) I'm currently using my M-Audio MobilePre USB for the Interface. I've set the Buffer size to 2048 and the Sample rate to 44100. I've played around with Interfaces and Buffer sizes and Sample rates but the results remain the same. Posted by John Williams - 28 Aug 10:48PM Hide picture Well, to my embarrassment, shutting down and restarting Sibelius seemed to have fixed my problem. Nonetheless here's the file I was working with. Attachment Irish Hymn-2.sib (37K) Back to top Allthreads Re: Sib. 7.1.3: Uneven playback
Posted by Ronald Pearl - 29 Aug 12:51AM Hide picture Not to sound too obvious, but shutting down/restarting will solve a lot of problems. It should always be the first thing to do before asking for assistance - there have been many times I was about to log on with my questions/frustrations, but then did what you did and all was well.
Sibelius seems to lose some of its abilities when the computer has been on for a while; if I am using it, it can keep up, but if I do a number of other things, come back, it can get kind of weird. Who knows? Glad the simple fix was all it needed!

Sounds like the drivers to the Mobile Pre could do with reinstalling. You can do this from here:
_US/download/MobilePre-Drivers
When choosing the buffer size, try and get it as low as possible (without introducing pops and crackles) and Sibelius will be a able to play back more accurately.

Sib. 7.1: Change Default to No Chord Symbols?
Posted by Sam Parry - 12 Apr 03:46PM Hide picture When I am inputting chords above the guitar part in all my scores, I never use chord diagrams. However, Sibelius puts chord diagrams under all my chord names without me wanting it to... Is there any way of a) Deleting numerous chord diagrams at once (they appear when I copy and past a part) and b) Making it so that the default setting is to not use chord diagrams?
Thanks! Back to top Allthreads Re: Sib. 7.1: Change Default to No Chord Symbols?

Posted by Bob Zawalich - 12 Apr 05:17PM Hide picture By default it will put chord diagrams on all guitar and bass instruments. Personally that drives me crazy.
You can turn it off for each score by doing what Robin says. What I did was to create a new guitar score, turn off the setting and export a house style.
I then imported the house style into any Manuscript Papers I have that use guitar or bass, so I would not have to turn the setting off again. This is how it should be, IMHO, unless I happen to be writing guitar books that expect you to not know how to finger a Cmaj7.
Importing a house style into a Manuscript Paper is very tedious, but it is easy with the downloadable plugin Import House Style To Manuscript Paper ( =377, category Layout). The plugin will make a user copy of any Manuscript Paper and import the desired house style into it.

Sib. 7.0: Highlights
Posted by Gordon Thornett - 06 Nov 10:50AM Hide picture I've just found a great use for 'highlights' - where you can make parts of the score go yellow. I'm working on condensing a score, originally written for a larger orchestra, to a lighter instrumentation. I've created extra staves in the score for the new instrumentation, but it was getting a bit confusing, differentiating the old from the new. (I don't want to delete any of the original scoring until I know that I've incorporated everything important into the new condensed version!) I've just hit on the idea of highlighting all the staves required for the new orchestration in yellow. A simple idea, but it should be of great help.
One small point: does anyone know how to un-highlight a stave? I thought that if I selected it and clicked on 'highlight' again in the ribbon the yellow surround would disappear, but it doesn't seem to toggle in this way.

Posted by Laurence Payne - 06 Nov 11:01AM (edited 06 Nov 11:02AM) Hide picture There are two plugins, Remove All Highlights and Remove Selected Highlights in Home/Plugins/Other. Typing "Highlight" into the Find In Ribbon box would have revealed this information.
But for a single highlight, it's probably easier to select it and press your Delete key.
(You just can't win when trying to make something "intuitive", can you :-) Back to top Allthreads Re: Sib. 7.0: Highlights
Posted by Gordon Thornett - 06 Nov 11:25AM Hide picture Thanks, Laurence, but this doesn't work for me. Home/plugins/other only gives me the "Remove all highlights" option, and Find in the ribbon box doesn't give me the 'remove selected highlights' option either. Selecting the highlighted stave and pressing the delete key brings up the warning: 'this will delete all music from this stave!'

Don't select the stave, just select the highlight. Click on the top or bottom edge of the coloured area.
I suggest you change your message header from "Sib. 7.0" unless you want EVERY reply to include "don't forget to update to the latest version" :-) Assuming you HAVE updated?

OK, I've changed my 'signature' to 7.13 (in Settings), but am not clear how to change the message header (or do I just have to do it each time I post a new message?)
