I thought I share this recent article by Google Thomas Kurian with all of you. This is relevant for us as building out industry specific reference architectures (such as for Telecom etc.), positions Centaurus cloud project towards the next journey of cloud computing. More importantly, by focusing on industry specific cloud platform needs, Centaurus project becomes much more compelling from expanding the community base standpoint.

Also, I forgot to include the following link for Centaurus FAQ page. This has lot of information about Centaurus/Mizar versus DPDK, as you had bunch of questions regarding DPDK. I am not sure if you have already seen this page, it has lots of Centaurus related details included in it besides DPDK, SR-IOV etc. Thanks.

This is great Rupal. I have logically categorized all the telecom requirements you sent out earlier. I have also included answers to most of the questions in yellow. This will definitely help us scope out the telecom reference architecture incrementally. All, feel free to chime in and keep iterating on this. Thanks.

======================================================

·         Compute

o   General

1.       How is the service mobility getting supported on Centaurus infrastructure? As part of our ongoing journey towards “Distributed Cloud”, we are already working towards enabling mobility aspect of edge cloud. Also, we recently initiated LFEdge/Akraino Blueprint project to this regards (Federated KubeEdge-MEC).

2.       Can we integrate any latency sensitive applications with Centaurus? Sure, this should not be an issue as far as datacenter applications landscape is concerned. However, for O-RAN type of applications (vDU, cCU etc.), one typically requires extremely low-latency real-time performance (1ms). This requires integration with accelerators such as Intel FlexTran (FPGA based) to work at Layer-1 signal processing environment. Centaurus should definitely be able to integrate with such accelerators to achieve this goal.

3.       What are the features that Centaurus has to address latency say, in case of IoT based setup?

4.       Have telco customers used Centaurus solutions for data center level requirement or metro / far edge level requirement? Not at this time yet.

5.       Can we orchestrate Bare metal servers? This is very high priority task for us and we are working towards that. With our current unified pluggable runtime framework that currently supports Containers & VMs as runtime workloads, it should be quite easy for us to orchestrate bare-metal by possibly leveraging Metal3/Ironic or Tinkerbell community projects.

6.       For automation, after data collection and processing, is there any AI/ML framework suggested by Centaurus? Centaurus is positioned as agnostic to AI/ML frameworks such as PyTorch, Tensorflow etc., if this is what you meant.

7.       How Centaurus provide the offering of framework for telco- Architecture which will deploy at edge + orchestration. Is there any support for network orchestration?

8.       Centaurus to highlight consideration that required in terms of resiliency, redundancy, low power, and space footprint for solution which will deployed at edge-needs to check if our solution meets the parameters.

9.       Do Centaurus have offering IaaS & container as service to put on edge nodes which can be managed as cluster or sub cluster at metro level or regional level at own flavor? As part of our ongoing journey towards “Distributed Cloud”, we are working towards enabling this capability that essentially includes Arktos/Kubernetes cluster nesting as part of the one possible edge topology.

10.    Can Centaurus provide container as service that can be managed at group level.

11.   For Docker+ K8 or container+ K8, which business model that Centaurus take at edge node. We currently support Docker & VMs. We are also exploring WebAssembly WASM/WASI based containerization as well as Unikernels based containerization.

12.   Can Centaurus help during the telecom transformation from VM to container based or Bare metal to container based or vice versa at top level? If Yes, then how? Definitely, Centaurs can support this as we have one common unified orchestration layer for all types of workloads (Containers, VMs, Bare-metal etc.)

13.   Are Centaurus work with FPJ, GPU OR MEGA DSB packs? We are currently working towards extensive GPU/Accelerators capabilities within Centaurus in support of emerging AI/ML application landscape (autonomous cars etc.)

14.   Do we have the Virtual Network Functions manager feature in Centaurus?

15.   Does Centaurus manage Open Core Network; like collection of microservices implementing various core network functions?

16.   Is there any node discovery function which can tell local capabilities of hardware broadcasted to rest of the nodes and cluster so that services can auto-align as per location with telemetry?

17.   Any latency sensitive application like disaggregated run, components, deployment, have you considered this in Centaurus infrastructure? Any learning from this that Centaurus has experienced?

18.   We are planning to add latency sensitive application in Centaurus If Centaurus implemented in the use cases of latency related function, how exactly Centaurus do that in cloud native environment on containers?

19.   Depending on different use cases which would deployed at edge, what kind of SLA binding or SLA delivering mechanism have Centaurus built in our application to assure that as an infrastructure to meet those expectation?

20.   Have Centaurus thought about how the service mobility support?

21.   Can Centaurus help to integrating cluster or multi cluster arrangement of the offering or services? As part of our ongoing journey towards “Distributed Cloud”, we are working towards enabling this cloud federation like capability across operators. This also includes Arkros/Kubernetes cluster nesting as part of the one possible edge topology.

22.   If Telco is interested in used Centaurus capabilities to develop domain orchestration, which can handle CNFM’s or VNFM’s as well as VM’s or cluster manager from container side and provide solution for domain for RAN and core, do Centaurus feel to expertise and capabilities can be leverage?

o   Network Functions (Containerized or Virtualized CNFs/VNFs)

We need to plan and build all this out as part of the Telecom reference architecture. Building CNFs/VNFs should be quite similar to building typical cloud/datacenter applications. However, it requires support for lower layers of networking, multiple network interfaces and integration with accelerators.

23.   How to do seamless migration from 4G EPC to 5GC in both Non-Stand-Alone (NSA) and Stand-Alone (SA) modes though Centaurus?

24.   What is Centaurus 5G migration strategy from EPS to 5G system?

25.   Do we have any inbuilt Network functions Tagging feature?

26.   How Centaurus handles ORAN based approach where RAN pieces are coming in data model through interfaces?

27.   When someone launch network functions, did they launched any kind of 5G code pieces or service tagging pieces in Centaurus infrastructure?

28.   How to manage telecom Core Network; LTE-4G, 5G, 3GPP 5G Core (5GC) and LTE Evolved Packet Core (EPC)

·         Network

  1. What are the methods of fast access of Packets from the Network Interface Cards (NIC)? Like Data Plane Development Kit (DPDK) and Single Root Input Output Virtualization (SR-IOV)? Centaurs/Mizar uses eBPF/XDP approach for enabling network virtualization. SR-IOV capability which makes one physical device appear as multiple virtual devices can potentially co-exist with XDP. Please see relevant link https://github.com/xdp-project/net-next/blob/master/Documentation/PCI/pci-iov-howto.rst for ongoing work to this regards.
  2. How to do seamless migration from 4G EPC to 5GC in both Non-Stand-Alone (NSA) and Stand-Alone (SA) modes though Centaurus? We need to plan and build all this out as part of the Telecom reference architecture.
  3. Is there any separate interface for handling communication over Radio Access Network (Open RAN)? We need to plan and build all this out as part of the Telecom reference architecture.
  4. How Centaurus is communicating with CNI for MULTUS / CILIUM / meta switch for telco needs. As mentioned earlier that Centaurs/Mizar uses eBPF/XDP approach for enabling the whole network virtualization. Celium also uses XDP technique for enabling certain networking capabilities.
  5. How in data planes, in terms of DPDK+SRIOV or SRIOV+ VPP+V4, how Centaurus can manage those acceleration pieces? Answered above.

·         Storage

Storage in Centaurus is pluggable using the Container Storage Interface (CSI). In the case of Centaurus, storage for VMs is volume mounted in the same manner as the containers. As a result, CSI storage interface works seamlessly works for both containers & VMs. Also, Ceph/Rook can seamlessly integrate with Centaurus.

  1. For CSI integration, which platform does Centaurus use?
  2. For CSI integration, how Centaurus is integrating to K8?
  3. Does Centaurus develop its own interface structure for CSI?
  4. If Telco want to provide local storage, then what kind of arrangement does Centaurus have? Can propose Ceph for storage.

Hi Deepak, Dr.Xiong, Anni & team,

Hope you all are doing well!

As Prashant mentioned, we are working with some of our telecom customers and  trying to get them part of Centaurus ecosystem.

Last few weeks we had couple of meetings, below are the high level question that they would like to see from Telecom standpoint.  We are working with Mr. XiaoNing to address the ask. Our goal is to focus on few use cases for telecom and build the industry specific solution (Centaurus for Telecom).  Of course, We can’t achieve everything at day one, but as a team our goal is to prioritize some use cases.

Looking forward to discusses more in our upcoming meeting. Meanwhile, please feel free to share your thoughts and feedback.

Have a great weekend!

I think the best to start with the Arktos and Mizar core foundations as Centaurus V1.0  and showcasing the two key areas.

Extreme Scalability : Showcasing power of the scale as we see the wave of Infrastructure Migration followed by App Modernization and then Infra upgrade/Edge for Scale and autonomy; I am super excited as I see the growth of cloud adoption and CXO/users are  convinced and committed.

Unified Orchestration : The cloud bare bone architecture  is the key and that’s how we built any migration strategy, the real crucks of cloud computing depends on your orchestration of founding base architecture,  we have been engaged with some large North American and Asian cloud provider on public/private cloud modernization efforts with automated tools like OpenAPI and tech like terraform along with Ansible and Chef for Config. TSC can define some of these from the beginning so we don’t have to rework on some of it.

BTW, many of you may not have been informed but we have been with OpenSDS (Aka SODA foundation ) from the inception and as a founding member, Its memory lane (sort of nostalgic moment as just saw some documents and emails  dated in 2017-18 😊) to see Centaurus same stage as OpenSDS/SODA.  In the beginning stage of OpenSDS/SODA; we picked up reference architecture from Minio and Zanko analysis. Click2Cloud still have more then 15-20 team members actively contributing, from development, community building and driving growth for SODA.  SODA has seen its first commercial use case (in process) via Cloud Brain integration. Proud to see we as a team has gone to a reputable opensource community; storage is definitely another great topic to have good integration point.

Thanks Prashant for the prompt response. Yes, agree with you on another possible opportunity from the standpoint of horizontal technology differentiations (Scalable & Highly Efficient AI/ML, Data Management etc.). Essentially, we showcase these advanced technology capabilities horizontally on top of inherent Centaurus key capabilities such as Extreme Scalability, Unified Orchestration etc.

Sanil, as you are deeply involved in the SODA foundation, it would be good to get your data management perspective and see if we can get SODA community members interested in all this.

Prof. Dustdar & Stefan, look forward to your invaluable feedback as well on all this.

Thanks.

Subject: RE: Centaurus Monthly TSC Meeting - Ecosystem Development

Hi Deepak,

I haven’t got the chance to go through the recording completely  but here are my two cents, the base for the Edge is to have bandwidth, data privacy and autonomy; most of the use case that we have to follow will also have the need or basic desire to have one of the three.  Another point is bringing the compute and storage near the source.

The classic use cases are the scenarios that requires compute processing, data processing and bandwidth at the source location. So far we see Telco, Agriculture, modern workplaces are the examples that are needed from our customers.   There is a need for industry specific solution with IOT devices dependency and AI at scale which mean Data and AI becomes a very imp. Data processing will largely depend on solutions like Google Query, Microsoft Synapse and other large DB stream processing that can ingest data from various sources.  Time Series could be one of the beast to handle. We have to think in the direction of integration points also.

You are right on point..  5GC, RAN, Edge – CORE, Storage, AI, Data processing etc… needs to be prioritize.  As of now we need to get the basic in order (Arktos and Mizar) integration in place before we could steer it to the Edge base, the current solutions should solve latency and scale issue.

I am working on whitepaper and Deepak more then happy to have you coauthor it, other TSC please LMK.

Thanks and regards,

Subject: Centaurus Monthly TSC Meeting - Ecosystem Development

Dear Centaurus project TSC members, this is a follow up to our discussion during the recent TSC meeting related to various ways for expanding the current ecosystem of Centaurus project. Nikita & Prashant, as you were not present during the meeting, I am not sure if you got a chance to catch up on all this by watching the recording link which Mengni sent out earlier.

In any case, we had a good back & forth brainstorming discussion for finding out ways to expand our community base. As we decided during the meeting, this email thread is to continue the discussion and hopefully come up with concrete action plan & strategy

Firstly, judging from the Github repository statistics below, community members definitely seem to be interested in exploring Centaurus Github repos. However, our interest goes beyond merely tracking Github repos statistics and more towards real user community adoption of Centaurus Infrastructure project for addressing their respective business needs.

One of the thoughts was to build out real business specific reference architecture/s & implementation/s for industry specific segments such as Telecom or Financial Services/Banking etc. As Prashant (Click2Cloud) recently mentioned that there seems to be strong interest for Centaurus from the telecom ecosystem he is currently engaged in. From Telecom standpoint, I could see the following reference implementations:

  1. Core Network – LTE-4G/EPC; 5GC;
  2. Radio Access Network (RAN)
  3. UPF implementation for Traffic Steering etc.
  4. BSS/OSS??

I would let Prashant chime in more on this as he is well versed with the telecom industry.

Nikita, do you think we can come up with something like this for other industry segments such as Financial Services etc.

Also, to get this going, one of the things we can initially do is to create a position paper for these reference scenarios. This paper essentially highlights why/how these use case scenarios would benefit from Centaurus platform key capabilities versus vanilla Kubernetes/OpenStack etc. Of course, we can also identify the gaps in the current Centaurus platform for enabling these use case scenarios. Once we are done with publishing the position paper, we can start building all this out. I am sure, this should definitely resonate better with the end user community versus Centaurus as a pure-play platform story.

These are few thoughts that came to my mind to get this discussion kick started. Let us all iterate all this via emails and hopefully come up with a concrete actionable plan for doing this. Thanks.

Regards,

Deepak Vij

Very nice article. Microsoft is also following the industry vertical specific clouds.  Time to market will be an important aspect, I see lot of potential for KungPeng hardware architecture winning the race as the hardware is equipped with AI.

Hoping to try some of the hardware in Lab with Centaurus running on it.

Thanks

Prashant
