Subject: My Observation Today on 125th Street
Reply-To: John D <smith...@earthlink.net>
At about 4:45 p.m. today (Monday, April 2nd)
while heading east on 125th Street, passing
the Apollo Theatre, there was a single
policeman standing in front of six youths...no
more than 14 years old...who were "lined up"
with their backs to the fense covering the
empty lot adjacent to the theatre.
I had passed the theatre, then suddenly turned
around to return to the western side of the theatre
(the Frederick Douglass side) to be an observer
(witness) to the incident, as no pedestrian was
stopping or paying any attention.
The sole policeman had apparently put out a signal
for backup, as one policeman approached from
the west end and another from the east end of
125th Street, the youths standing calmly as the
first policeman takes out his pad to right up "an
incident" report, I suspect.
I am standing near the sole street vender working
on the western end of the Apollo marque, asking
him if he had a camera, as I asked a few passersby,
who ignored me. As I stood a safe distance not
to be charged with interferring in an action, the
second policeman overheard me asking for some-
one with a camera to record the incident and he
pointed to the other side of the street letting me
know that I could purchase one at Verizon across
the street.
Within seconds three police cars arrived in front of
the theatre as I and the vendor spoke about these
clean looking, innocent looking youth being stopped
(but not frisked, yet). Seconds later several police
cars moved in and, as quickly, moved away from
the scene...the first car was driven by a Black officer.
Obviously, it was apparent to them that these youths
posed no threat.
I continued on my way, stopping to ask the palm card
distributor under the Apollo marque if he had a camera.
He responded that the Apollo security camera records
all events.
What could have justified stopping these youths? I
wish I knew, but I had to move on. I believe we must
stand our ground as observers/recorders. It's time
for me to purchase a camera/recorder as my cheap
cellphone can only take small pictures without the
ability to download them.
What would be their response if their children were
stopped while walking white! John
