Iason amicis sal.

[This email is being posted to CENARVM (Cenae Regionis Vasingtoniensis Maioris), Rusticatio Alumni, and Rusticatio 2 - 2013.  I apologize to those of you getting triple-hit this time]

In addition to our time at Rusticatio, we (in various parts of the country) try to periodically hold a Latin Cena - a time to dine and speak Latin together (to this end we started the CENARVM Google Group).  These are always wonderful events, where we get to practice our Latin, and spend time with some friends that we don't see very often.  However, we found ourselves wanting something more frequent.  This meant meeting during the week, and with smaller groups.

A little more than six months ago, I started a group on Meetup.com, called Baltimore Active Latin.  I think everyone who has been involved will agree that this has been a great success (we have met more than 16 times to speak Latin in the last six months) and I would like to share some of that success with you.

Meetup.com is a website that allows you join and/or create groups with various focuses, in order to meet new people, or explore a particular interest.  As mentioned before, making this group more local has allowed us to meet much more frequently, which has a tremendous impact on our Latin collectively.  Meetup makes scheduling events very simple, and allows us to keep track of attendance.  Right now we meet on a semi-regular basis at a local coffee shop in Baltimore, but have also done museum visits, and this last week a hike at a state park.  Most importantly, Meetup will recommend our group to other people who list similar interests, which allows us to grow beyond people we know already.  So far this has resulted in at least one person attending a SALVI event, and then changing his major to Classics.

I'd like to make you aware of three Latin Speaking Meetup groups that already exist, and encourage you to join if you live in these regions:
- Northern Virginia Speakers of Latin: http://www.meetup.com/Northern-Virginia-Speakers-of-Latin/

If you live in these areas, I would encourage you to join some of these Meetups.  There is some overlap between the groups, but having local groups helps with event planning.

If you are coming to Rusticatio for the first time, there might be an opportunity for you to meet some of the people you will see this summer.  There will certainly be opportunities to continue your learning after Rusticatio, so don't want to get signed up!

If you already get together with a few friends to speak Latin, I would recommend setting something up on Meetup.com.  Using the website has played a big role in making sure we keep up with one-another throughout the year.

I'm very much looking forward to seeing many of you again, and meeting some of you for the first time.  If you have any questions about using Meetup, getting added to any of the groups above, or suggestions for getting your Meetup started, please let me know.

Quidquid id est, curate ut valeatis!

Thanks, Jason, for including me in this email.  Even though I am teaching French (and next year, Italian too!)
currently, I've kept my ACL membership alive and would like to keep up with Latin.
Tonight we are discussing Heraclitus at the Classics Book Club at Politics and Prose.

Looking forward to hearing more from you this summer.
Hello to Aurora especially,
Carolyn (Carolina)
