Many of you knew, even tangentially, our beloved David Morgan who passed away from acute liver failure this past February.  

David would have been 54 on Monday, July 22.  I've been working on getting folks to send thinking-of-you cards to his parents.  Many of you are my friends through SALVI or Facebook and know of this, or have already sent cards.  Please forgive the redundancy if this is the case.  I thought however that this old Latin mailing list that I've hobbled together through the years might get even more cards to his parents during the upcoming week. 

Among the many high praises we hear about David's erudition, linguistic acumen, inspired pedagogy, and humble humanity, he was also a gentle man who was devoted to his parents.  Honoring and caring for them makes sense to me somehow, even as I continue to grieve the loss of my dear friend. 

As a preacher's kid I continue to learn from my wonderful parents how to love those in pain. It seems to me, then, that it doesn't matter if a person knew David well, or at all.  If you have been touched in any way by who David Morgan was or by someone close to you who knew him, it's okay to send a card if you want to.  We are all knitted to one another in ways that we can name to good effect as we hang out together on this planet.

Thanks, Dawn, for this. I met him only once at UKY in 2003 but it would be a gross understatement to say he was impressive. I'll drop a note to his folks as you suggest.

FYI, as I think I mentioned to you at Biduum, I retired from public school in June and am now in Belgium with my wife and her family until Oct. (including visits to all our Eurofriends and a big hiking venture in Norway). Keep me on the list, though. In animo non habeo disparere and will still make an occasional appearance at cena, biduum, and possibly other events.
