Salvete,

Sorry to be contacting you about a non-cena event, but I wanted all to
know about my upcoming reading/discussion at the Piedmont Ave branch
of the Oakland Library. Please come if interested and able. Here is
all the info below. Please email for additional details.

Marcus Aurelius: Ancient Wisdom for Modern Times
He was trained as a philosopher in his youth, and then became the most
powerful man in the ancient world. His personal writings kept him
grounded in the midst of a chaotic world of politics, war and plague.
Marcus Aurelius was a true philosopher-king, and his advice to himself
can be of help to anyone who is seeking true happiness in their lives.

Local author and scholar John Piazza will read from his recent
translation of the writings of the emperor. The reading and discussion
will focus on the everyday uses of philosophy in an increasingly
uncertain world.

Excerpts from The Essential Marcus Aurelius will be provided, and a
limited number of copies of the book will be available for purchase.

John Piazza lives in Oakland and teaches theology and Latin at St.
Vincent de Paul High School in Petaluma. The Essential Marcus
Aurelius, translated and introduced by Piazza and philosopher Jacob
Needleman, is published by Penguin-Tarcher.
