The film is about the inspirational story of a real battle in which only 300 soldiers, led by Baji Prabhu Deshpande, the commander of Shivaji fought against 12,000 Bijapuri soldiers in Battle of Pavan Khind.
The teaser of the film was released on 4 March 2022, which included a voice-over given by Raj Thackeray.[13] The trailer of the film was released on 10 October 2022 and received 5 million views in less than 24 hours on YouTube.[14]
Following the release of the trailer, the movie generated controversy. The Bandal descendants objected to the trailer and submitted a detailed complaint letter two days before the movie's premiere, alleging that the movie is based on a false history.[25] Within a week after the film's release, Amol Mitkari of the Nationalist Congress Party and politician Sambhaji, the 13th direct descendant of Shivaji, and their outfit Swarajya Sanghatan criticized it as misleading historical revisionism.[26][27] On 7 November 2022, MLA Jitendra Awad and NCP workers shut down the film's screening in Thane's Viviana Mall. A fan was also assaulted by an activists.[28] The film's director clarified his position on this matter during a press conference, stating that the film is based on historical sources and has been submitted to the Censor Board.[29][30]
Mahaadev is a 1989 Indian Hindi-language action thriller film directed by Raj N. Sippy. It stars Vinod Khanna, Meenakshi Sheshadri, Raj Babbar and Sonu Walia in pivotal roles.[2] The film score and soundtrack were composed by Ilaiyaraaja.[3] The film revolves around an ex cop (Khanna) who is aggravated by the unjust practices of the rich and corrupt people, which makes him rejoin the police force.
The soundtrack features six songs. All songs were written by Farooq Qaisar, while "Mujhe Bahon Mein Bhar Ke" was written by Gulshan Bawra. The track "Rimjhim Rimjhim" was recreated in Tamil by Ilaiyaraaja's son Yuvan Shankar Raja as "Theendi Theendi", for the Tamil-film Bala (2002).
The Marathi movie Har Har Mahadev has recently stirred up controversy in Maharashtra, leading to the detention of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MLA Jitendra Awhad by the Thane police for forcibly stopping the film's screening in Thane's Viviana mall early this week.
The real-life Pavan Khind battle, in which a small group of Baji Prabhu Deshpande's Mawlas (Shivaji's soldiers) battled against hundreds of troops from the Bijapur Sultanate, served as the inspiration for the movie Har Har Mahadev. Abhijeet Deshpande wrote and directed the sweeping historical action drama movie, which Zee Studios and Sunil Phadtare jointly produced under the name Shree Ganesh Marketing And Films.
The mawlas engaged in this battle for more than five to six hours, securing Shivaji Maharaj's safe arrival at Vishalgad. In this conflict, Deshpande died. One of the several warriors that aided Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in achieving his goal of "Swarajya" was Baji Prabhu Deshpande.
A descendant of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj of the Kolhapur royal line, Sambhajiraje Chhatrapati, told reporters in Pune that any films that misrepresent the historical events of Shivaji's life will be condemned, and that every effort will be made to prevent their release.
It has been noted, there are several errors in the recently released film Har har Mahadev. Additionally, we are learning about the falsification of the truth in Vedat Marathe Veer Daudale Saat (an upcoming movie). If such a movie is produced, we won't just criticise it; we'll also block its distribution, Sambhajiraje warned.
Parties like the Sambhaji Brigade and others protested the movie, arguing that it distorted the truth. On Monday, NCP workers and NCP MLA Jitendra Awhad rushed a multiplex in Thane to halt the performance of Har Har Mahadev.
The film's producers have received a legal notice outlining a total of 14 objections. According to attorney Vikas Shinde, "We have sent the notice asking the director and production firm to present documents of the incidents featured in the film." On behalf of 12 parties, including people and organizations, Shinde sent the legal warning.
It's similar to confining Maharaj by portraying him as a Marathis-only defender, that was never the case. One of the tribal chiefs, Bandals, is seen in another scenario defending a rapist. The basis for this representation has been sought after by the Bandals' descendants, according to Shinde.
One of the main concerns is that there is no historical record of a fight between Baji Prabhu Deshpande and King Shivaji, nor is there any record of Deshpande being present when Afzal Khan was killed. Khan is portrayed as being held on Shivaji's lap while he tears at Khan's stomach like Narsimha. The note questioned, "Do they wish to portray Shivaji as an avatar of Narsimha?"
Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leaders and former Maharashtra minister Jitendra Ahwad, who protested against the Marathi film Har Har Mahadev and allegedly created a ruckus at a theatre in Thane have been booked for assault and hooliganism.
There was a protest at a multiplex in Thane at which NCP leader Jitendra Awhad was present. The show was stopped, and a patron was beaten up as he had tried to stop the protestors. A case has been registered against the protestors who raised the issue of distortion of history. It is said that the descendants of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj also raised an objection.
Deshpande stated that the Central Bureau of Film Certification (CBFC) had raised concerns about the depiction of a fight between Baji Prabhu Deshpande, a commander of Shivaji, and the Maratha king himself.
Deshpande further said that he had taken KA Keluskar's book on Shivaji Maharaj to show about the portrayal of the incident in his film, and it was only after the CBFC was satisfied that the film was given a certificate and allowed to be screened.
