Robert Williams has battled numerous injuries over the last few years, dating  back to his time in Boston. He is not a long-term fit in Portland. The Blazers have got a big in Clingan as their long term fit in center. Their recent first-round draft pick, Yang Hansen, is a big man. So Robert Williams is not long-term for Portland.

Williams would be somebody that could fit right into what the Celtics are doing. He's got familiarity with the personnel, he's been very close over the years with Jason Tatum. He's somebody I think the Celtics will keep their eye on and maybe talk  to Portland about in the weeks ahead. They've dealt with Portland before. They had the Jru Holiday deal last offseason, and so some familiarity between the front offices.

And that's where I think the mindset of the Celtics is at right now. I don't think they're looking to offload someone like Anfernee Simons to get under the luxury tax. They're seeing what you are seeing . . . a team that is locked in with a superstar in Jaylen Brown,  who is a top 5 MVP candidate, borderline all-stars in Derrick White and Payton Pritchard, and a bunch of role players who have played exceedingly well.  They have a bunch of guys coming of the bench that are giving them productive minutes.  This team, at least in the Eastern Conference, is right on the cusp of being a viable contender to win the ECF championship.  If Tatum comes back and if they get one more big man, then all the sudden you have to look at the Celtics as one of the favorites for the title, which is not something you would have predicted a couple of months ago.

Jack,

Expiring contract and at $13.2M. Man, given his injury history I think I’d be more in favor of converting the 2-way deal that Amari Williams is on and explore what they might get for Boucher.

Untelated: Did my eyes deceive me or did anyone else notice Joe sent Boucher to the scorer’s table against the Raptors with less than a minute to the go but they couldn’t get a stoppage from a dead ball situation so he walked back to bench and never got in?

Yeah Steve - def agree.  That’s probably why RWIII hasn’t popped up on any trade rumors … it doesn’t seem to work logistically without sending out 3 guys (Hauser, Tillman and Scheierman) to get Rob Will back … Portland would have to waive 2 guys and we’d need to promote or sign 2 guys.

But the other Williams (Amari) would be a great fit on the roster if they decide to stand pat … can he play some point forward to give the Cs a Jumbo li sup??

Now if we can get Grant back, we could start Tatum, Brown, Williams, Williams, and Williams!

It could be Boucher instead of Scheierman, but that’s basically right. Presumably they could then promote Amari and possibly sign someone off the buyout market, although they’d still be over the first apron so they could only sign someone whose original contract was below the mid level exception. I’m not entirely sure that series of moves makes the team better, given Timelord’s questionable availability, but it would leave them with more cap room in the offseason.

The Mannix podcast or whatever it was about Rob Will to the Cs got written up below as well … I think it’s no more than Mannix’s idea … that has a low probability of happening …

It wouldn't be the worst move if possible. We have Tillman pulling splinters, along with Boucher and Minot of late . If remotely healthy, I can see him moving ahead of the aforementioned.
But its just a rumor, so Im not going to read much into it.
