The Celtics looked like a team that knew they were controlling their own seeding destiny in the Eastern Conference on Wednesday night in South Beach. Coming off an ugly loss against the Hawks on Monday, a win against one of their toughest remaining opponents (Miami) would go a long way towards securing Boston the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference.
Joe Mazzulla had his group ready as he treated the matchup like a playoff game with Jayson Tatum and Neemias Queta back in the lineup. He played his star duo of Tatum and Jaylen Brown 37 minutes as the pair helped carry Boston to an impressive 147-129 win.
With Boston’s stars getting big minutes, a promising sign with their recent injuries, there was less playing time to hand out on the wing. Baylor Scheierman (18 minutes) got his usual opportunities, but the second unit was trimmed from there. Jordan Walsh (5 minutes), fresh off a week of strong outings got the nod over Hugo Gonzalez in the rotation. It was the first time since November that the rookie did not see meaningful rotation minutes, a choice that was not reflective of any poor play by him.

Jayson Tatum will realistically need some more time to get back to his All-Star self. He’s coming off a major Achilles injury and it hasn’t even been a month since he’s been back on the court.
But Tatum has already shown glimpses of what he looks like at his best. This time, it was his first triple-double of the season in the Celtics’ blowout win over the Heat on Wednesday. Tatum posted his first triple-double of the season with 25 points, 18 rebounds and 11 assists Wednesday, doing just a little bit of everything.
“It sounds cliche: I feel a little bit better each game,” Tatum said, via CLNS Media. “I don’t know how long it’s going to take to get back to where I was or hopefully better. The goal is to just continue to stack days.”

The Celtics ambushed the Heat with a franchise record first quarter Wednesday in Miami. The C’s made 11 3-pointers on their way to 53 points in the opening frame alone, cruising to a massive lead. For a Miami team that has struggled defensively of late, it wasn’t a great sign with Boston finishing with 147 points on the night.
But Miami coach Erik Spoelstra had a surprising reaction to the opposing point total following the Celtics’ win over the Heat on Wednesday. Instead of pointing out the defensive miscues, he said the Heat were ready to play. It’s just that the Celtics’ shot-making was at a different level.
“This is gonna sound crazy, but this is different than the other games we’re talking about,” Spoelstra told reporters. “Our guys were locked in and competing. There was an exceptional level of shot-making on their part to start the game. There’s probably a handful we could’ve been stronger on-balance to take away some of the 3s.”

Jaylen Brown led the way in a historic night for the Celtics offense on Wednesday night in Miami.
Brown scored 43 points in 37 minutes, helping Boston cruise to a 147-129 blowout road win over the Heat in South Beach, making him Wednesday’s Name to Know. The Name to Know Player of the Game is sponsored by John’s Sewer and Drain Cleaning, the Name to Know when your drains don’t flow.
It was the 7th 40-point night for Brown this season as he strengthens his case for an All-NBA nod. Brown scored 20 of his game-high 43 points in the first quarter, setting the pace for Boston’s offense as they scored the most points (53) in a first quarter in franchise history. The offense was efficient for Brown all over the court as he went 8-of-11 from the field on his way to a 17-of-29 shooting performance over four quarters. Brown also went 4-of-10 from 3-point range and 5-of-7 from the free throw line.

The Celtics blew out the Heat 147-129 after a historic first quarter Wednesday in Miami. The C’s scored 53 points, a franchise record for points in a first quarter, to sprint ahead of the Heat. Boston improved to 51-45 on the season while Miami dropped to 40-37.
While the C’s and Heat exchanged early blows with a flurry of buckets, Boston stayed hot in the first quarter. The C’s used a 27-3 run to put themselves ahead of the Heat for good on the night. The shots slowed down some, but it was still a 23-point C’s lead at halftime.
The Heat responded in a big way in the third quarter. After the C’s hit 11 3-pointers in the first quarter, Miami hit 11 3-pointers of its own in the third. That allowed the Heat to cut it to a 10-point game going into the fourth quarter. It was interesting early in the fourth, but the C’s pulled away for the victory.

The Celtics have had all kinds of success in Miami during the past three years, winning nine consecutive games in South Beach. That trend continued in historic fashion on Wednesday night.
Boston erupted for 53 first quarter points against the Heat, the most points scored in a first quarter in franchise history.
Jaylen Brown led the way for Boston in the opening frame, as the visitors closed out the quarter on a 24-3 run in the final 4:12 to put together a eye-opening frame and build a 20-point lead after just 12 minutes.

The Celtics are looking to complete a four-game season sweep of the Heat as their margin of victory has shrunk over the last three games. After a 13-point win back in December, Boston then had a 5-point win in Miami in January, and a 2-point win in Boston in February. Now at 50-25, the Celtics look to collect another win over one of their rivals and get closer to locking up the two seed in the East, as they currently hold a 2.5 game lead on the New York Knicks, who are visiting the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday.

Add the Mavericks to the list of teams who would love to have Brad Stevens running their basketball operations. Dallas is looking for a new general manager after firing Nico Harrison earlier this season and the search remains ongoing.
Stevens is on Mavs owner Patrick Dumont’s “wish list,” according to Sports Illustrated’s Chrix Mannix. That list also includes some heavy hitters like the Thunder’s Sam Presti, the Cavaliers’ Koby Altman and the Timberwolves’ Tim Connelly. That’s a loaded list with guys are considered some of the sport’s brightest minds.
Realistically, Stevens isn’t going anywhere. He’s led the Boston front office since stepping down as coach following the 2020-21 season, guiding the organization to the 2024 NBA championship. Even with the Celtics expected to have a gap year this season, they’ve instead been one of the best teams in the conference.
