Celtics guard creating surprising trade deadline dilemma for Brad Stevens

The trade rumors around Anfernee Simons have been swirling ever since the Celtics landed the former Blazers guard in June in exchange for Jrue Holiday. The 27-year-old arrived in Boston as a veteran on a pricey expiring contract and was set to play a reserve role for the first time in four seasons.

It was a clear adjustment for Simons in the first few weeks of the season, but the crafty scorer has gained a new level of comfort recently. The latest example came on Thursday night when Simons erupted for a season-high 39 points to spark a comeback win over the Heat. Simons was efficient in the scoring outburst, going 13-of-28 from the field in just 34 minutes while also dishing out four assists in the victory.

“Just a complete game,” Joe Mazzulla told reporters in Miami. “Credit to him and credit to his teammates for creating that environment for him to be able to do it. But he obviously kept us in it in the first half and helped us pull away at the end.”

The Celtics are entering the final phase of roster evaluation leading up to the trade deadline next month. Jaylen Brown makes important admission on off-night in Heat win

Because you selected: Basketball

Souichi Terada | January 16, 2026 at 05:30 AM

The Celtics looked off-balance right from tipoff against the Heat. Their starters missed shots and gave up open looks on the other end. It was a sluggish open that saw the C’s down 19 points midway through the first quarter.

Jaylen Brown made an important admission as he struggled throughout the first half. The Celtics still pulled out the 119-114 victory over the Heat on Thursday, courtesy of their bench led by Anfernee Simons’ season-high 39 points. But it was a grinder of a game for the C’s to snap a two-game losing streak.

“Not my best game,” Brown told reporters, via CLNS Media. “Felt a little sluggish. Felt a little heavy on my shots. Just felt a step slow this game. But we found a way to pull it out, so that’s the most important.”

Because you selected: Basketball

Souichi Terada | January 16, 2026 at 05:00 AM

The Celtics were stuck in the mud to start Thursday’s game against the Heat, finding themselves down 19 points midway through the first quarter. But that all changed when Anfernee Simons put his fingerprints on the game.

It came down to the wire, but the C’s beat the Heat 119-114 in Miami to snap a two-game losing streak. Simons was masterful on his way to a season-high 39 points, making unique history with the Celtics. He entered the history books with the fourth-most points scored by a Celtic coming off the bench. And of those other great scoring nights, only Simons’ came on the road.

“I’ve always said figuring out what the game needs,” Simons told reporters, via CLNS Media. “Each and every game is always going to be different. Tonight was more of like we need you to be aggressive and play how you know how to play. Just happened to be more aggressive and scoring more points.”

Souichi Terada | January 15, 2026 at 10:36 PM

While the Celtics had to climb out of an early deficit to the Heat, they stormed back in the fourth quarter. The C’s downed the Heat in a 119-114 victory Thursday in Miami, snapping their two-game losing streak.

It was the Anfernee Simons show, making him Thursday’s “Name to Know” Player of the Game. The Name to Know Player of the Game is sponsored by John’s Sewer and Drain Cleaning, the Name to Know when your drains don’t flow.

Simons scored a season-high 39 points off the bench, leading the C’s on a night when their starters weren’t at their best. He shot 13-for-28 from the field and 7-for-16 on 3-pointers. Simons added another four rebounds and four assists to his stat line. The scoring output was the most ever for a Celtic coming off the bench.

4 takeaways as Celtics rally past Heat after historic night by reserve

Because you selected: Basketball

Brian Robb | January 15, 2026 at 10:14 PM

The Celtics rallied from a 19-point deficit on Thursday night thanks to a historic night from Anfernee Simons and grinded their way to a 119-114 win over the Heat in Miami.

The Heat opened the game up with a 28-9 outburst and maintained that double-digit lead for much of the first three quarters behind some balanced scoring and hot 3-point shooting.

However, Boston’s bench kept the visitors in the game all night, though led by a sensational performance by Anfernee Simons, his best in a Celtics uniform. The reserve guard erupted for a season-high 39 points, including 16 in the fourth quarter to help erase a double-digit deficit in the final frame and snap Boston’s two-game losing streak. The scoring output set a new Celtics franchise record for most points by a reserve in a game.

Part of the packed slate of college basketball games set for Thursday, Jan. 15 is a Big East matchup involving the defending national champions at Gampel Pavilion in Storrs, Conn. where the No. 1 UConn Huskies are hosting the Villanova Wildcats.

This college basketball game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. EST and will be broadcast on FS1. UConn is 17-0 with eight of those victories coming against Big East foes. Outside of a 3-point win over No. 8 Michigan, and a 13-point victory against No. 9 Louisville in the season opener, UConn has had little trouble blowing out the competition, as seven of the team’s wins were by at least 40 points. Back on Sunday, Sarah Strong once again led the team in points, rebounds, assists and steals, with 18 points, 13 boards, six helpers and five steals. Kayleigh Heckel came off the bench to equal Strong in assists while also scoring 8 points, grabbing five boards and swiping a steal. Blanca Quiñonez was the team’s seconding-leading scorer with 15, also from off the bench, to go with three steals and a block.
