If your like me you were probably exposed to radio at a young age in some form or another.
I was one of those kids that was introduced to radio as my mom and I moved around from place to place to place.
I remember Medium Wave (AM) was all we had in our station wagon , hey i was born in the late sixties after all.
If I was allowed to change the station i would eagerly look for that elusive flamethrower from Cincinnati,Ohio 700 WLW , at the time we were making our way around California so stations from the East were a rare thing. Other stations would come and go as the conditions changed and i thought how cool would it be to work in radio. Over the years many radio's came and went as i was too young to fully understand how radio's worked. Some were thrown out because i found a screw driver and well... they never survived my curiosity. Parts were often everywhere on the floor but never made it back into the radio they came out of. It wasn't until about 8 years old when i received a few radio shack kits, 30-in-1 and crystal radio's taught me the basics of radio.
Eventually more and more radio's survived my tinkering and curiosity.
I finally made Cleveland,Ohio my home and over the years was exposed to all types of music and talk radio.
My parents had an Emerson Stereo and turntable, if mom wasn't listening to Classical music from WCLV FM my dad would be listening to Jazz or talk radio. As for me , i was listening to WMMS-FM 101 or G98 WGCL with Jim Bohanan at the controls. At some point i was given some old military radio's and after some trial and error i was able to get a few shortwave signals using a plug in crystal out of a military field radio tied into the Heathkit 35-in1kit. It was crude but with 80 feet of thin wire i was able to listen to WWV , Voice of America and Radio China International. Occasionally the radio would revert back to Medium Wave and i could hear Radio Canada International. I have my parents and radio to thank for exposing me to such a great medium and so many genres of music, which is most likely why i listen to so many types of music now.
So what stations inspired you over the years?? Add your story here. Before I close there was many other stations that made impressions on me , KUSW Shortwave was a Classic Rock station , now FM out of New Mexico and WRNO World Wide from New Orleans.
Cheers.
