The STEAM Discovery Center is an extracurricular STEAM education and teacher training institution. At the Center, we encourage every member to think creatively, solve real-world problems, and challenge their limitations. Our programs are fun, project-based learning experiences where students can make connections between school, their community, and the broader world. Our teacher training programs provide teachers with expertise in modern pedagogical best practices, such as experiential learning, Universal Design for Learning, and reflective practice, that will help spread our passion for STEAM teaching across the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
To my surprise, I noticed that my students were extremely happy when they had the chance to express their understanding of the lesson even though they made mistakes. The engagement of my students was so high that three students refused to leave my session when it ended and kept writing on the board.
New World of Steam was announced for the Nintendo Switch during a Nintendo Direct on 8 February 2023, with no release date revealed.[1][2] No gameplay was shown; the teaser trailer consisted of Professor Hershel Layton walking through an industrial area.[3] A new trailer was released in March 2023, revealing that the game takes place one year after the end of Professor Layton and the Unwound Future, with the story taking place in an American town named Steam Bison.[4] Steam Bison has a steampunk aesthetic.[4]
In November 2023, it was announced that New World of Steam would be released in 2025.[5] Some details of the plot were released on the game's official website, with "highly advanced steam engines" causing a technological revolution in Steam Bison and a "mysterious incident" prompting Luke Triton to invite Hershel Layton to the town.[5]
The puzzles for the game will be designed by a group named QuizKnock, as Akira Tago, the puzzle designer for the other Professor Layton games, died in 2016.[6] Yo Oizumi will be reprising his role as Hershel Layton from previous titles, while Mio Imada will be voicing Luke Triton[6] in place of Maki Horikita, who announced her retirement from acting in 2017.[7]
Between 1941 and 1944, there were 25 Union Pacific Big Boy Locomotives made. Each Big Boy was approximately 132 feet in length and weighed upwards of 1.2 million pounds, making them the largest steam locomotives in the world. They were primarily used for hauling freight over the mountains during World War II, contributing significantly to the war effort and the economic expansion of the post war effort.
Big Boys were created at a pivotal time, as their size and power allowed them to haul trains weighing over 4,000 tons at speeds up to 80 miles per hour. Despite their size and power, they were known for their smooth ride and ability to maintain high speeds over long distances. Big Boys were also incredibly agile for their size which helped them negotiate tricky curves.
You can always visit Big Boy #4004 in Holliday Park in Cheyenne, however, a few times a year the Union Pacific Steam Shop and RoundHouse does open up for tours. Tours sell out quickly, so be sure to stay up to date! Also, check out the Cheyenne Depot Museum popular Depot Days where you can learn about this amazing locomotive in-person.
Out of the 25 Big Boy Steam Engines that were built, there is only one that is still operational. Big Boy 4014 was reacquired by Union Pacific in 2014, and between 2014 and 2019 was restored and brought back to life just in time for the 150th anniversary of the first transcontinental railroad.
Big Boy #4014 will embark on its Westward Bound Tour this summer! Kicking off on June 30th, Big Boy will leave home and head to Roseville, CA, and will return back by the end of July. Mark your calendars for public displays in Roseville on July 12th-13th and in Ogden, UT on July 20th-21st.

Big Boy No.4014 has a rich history dating back to 1941. It was designed to haul heavy freight trains over mountain ranges. Only 25 of these "Big Boys" were ever built. It was retired in 1961, but Union Pacific reacquired it in 2013 and restored it to operating condition. It was returned to service in 2019 to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the Transcontinental Railroad's Completion. And now it is making its way to Roseville!
Visitors will have the opportunity to witness its mighty splendor from 9am - 3pm on both days. On July 13th, there will also be an additional event at Vernon Street Town Square filled with fun activities for the whole family. Downtown Roseville Merchants are also joining in on the fun with special offers!

The Global STEAM workshops are ideal for middle school science, STEM, art, social studies, or ELA teachers interested in working across disciplines to engage their students in creative pursuits and problem solving. Each workshop will provide participating teachers with classroom materials and meals. Recruitment priority will be given to teams of middle school teachers.
Global STEAM lessons build on the Novel Engineering program developed by the Center for Engineering Education Outreach at Tufts University as an integrated approach to learning STEAM through literacy. In Novel Engineering, students collaborate to design and build solutions for problems presented in youth fiction and non-fiction. Our adaptation of the Novel Engineering program focuses on global issues by using stories from around the world.
In particular, the Corliss engine gave rise to giant textile centers, such as Fall River, in Massachusetts. The energy needed to drive the vast numbers of machines used in textile mills was considerable but the delicacy of the threads and fabrics produced by textile machinery demanded that the power source be very responsive. The patented Corliss valve gear allowed the engine to maintain the precise speed needed to avoid thread breakage while simultaneously responding to varying loads as different machines were brought in or out of operation.
